RHODE ISLAND.

Boundaries.-Bounded north and east by Massachusetts, south by the Atlantic, and west by Connecticut.

Soil and Climate.-The soil is in general productive, but more suitable for pasturage than cultivation, and the climate is noted for its salubrity. Face of the Country.-The face of the country is agreeably uneven; in some places hilly, but no where mountainous.

Rivers.--Providence, Taunton, and Patucket, are the principal rivers.

Canal-The Blackstone Canal is 40 miles long, and forms a communication between Providence in this State, and Worcester in Massachusetts. Bays.-Narraganset Bay extends about thirty miles into the southern part of the State.

Islands.-Rhode Island and Block Island are the principal.

Towns.-The chief towns are Providence, Newport, Bristol, and Warren.

Providence is the metropolis, and Providence and Newport are alternately the capital.

Education.-Brown University is at Providence, and learning is generally diffused among the inhabitants.

Productions.-The staple productions are beef, pork, butter, and cheese.

Rhode Island is one of the original States, and is the only State in the Union which has not formed a constitution since the declaration of independence, being still governed by the charter it received from King Charles II.

Rhode Island, for its population, is the greatest manufacturing State in the Union.

Length 50 miles, breadth 40: square miles, 1300. Population, 83,059.

CONNECTICUT.

Face of the Country.--The face of the country is generally uneven, and in the north-western part mountainous.

Rivers.--The principal rivers are Connecticut, Housatonic or Stratford, and Thames.

Canal.--The Farmington Canal extends from the city and port of New Haven to the north boundary of the State, a distance of 75 miles.

Towns.--The chief towns are New Haven, Hartford, New London, Norwich, Middleton, and Litchfield.

New Haven is the metropolis, and New Haven and Hartford are alternately the capital. Education.-Learning is generally diffused among the inhabitants. Yale College, at New Haven, is an institution justly celebrated. Washington College and the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb are at Hartford.

Productions.-The staple productions are grain, beef, pork, butter, and cheese.

Connecticut is one of the original States. Length 90 miles, breadth 70: square miles, 5,100. Population, 275,248.

NEW YORK.

Boundaries.-Bounded north by Lakes Erie, Ontario, the river St. Lawrence, and Lower Canada; east by Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut; south by the Atlantic, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; and west by Pennsylvania.

Soil. The soil is various, but the greatest proportion of it is good, particularly in the western part of the State.

Climate. The climate in the north-eastern part

is very cold in winter, in the western more temperate, and in the south-east changeable.

Mountains. The most noted mountains are the Catskill and Highlands.

Face of the Country--Is diversified. The eastern part of this State is mountainous, the middle undulating, and the western part mostly level. Minerals.-The minerals are iron, lead, and

gypsum.

Rivers.-The principal rivers are the Hudson, Mohawk, Genessee, and St. Lawrence.
