NORTH CAROLINA.

Boundaries.-Bounded north by Virginia, east by the Atlantic, south by South Carolina, and west by Tennessee.

Mountains.-The Alleghany mountains run through the western part of this state.

Face of the country. The face of the country,

in the eastern part, is low and level; in the middle hilly; and the western part mountainous.

Minerals.-The minerals are gold, iron, coal, and lead.

Climate. The climate in the eastern part is hot and unhealthy, but the western is healthy and pleasant.

Soil. The soil in the eastern part is sandy and barren, but the middle and western parts are more productive.

Productions. The staple productions are cotton, tobacco, Indian corn, tar, pitch, and staves. Rivers. The principal rivers are Roanoke, Neuse, Pamtico, Cape Fear, Yadkin, Catawba, and Chowan.

Canal. The Dismal Swamp canal and Roanoke navigation are partly in this state, but principally in Virginia.

Sounds. The principal sounds in North Carolina are Albemarle and Pamtico.

Inlets. The principal inlets are Occacoke, and Currituc.

Capes.-The capes are Fear, Hatteras, and Lookout.

Towns-The chief towns are Newbern, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Wilmington, Edenton, Washington, Plymouth, Hillsboro', Salisbury, Salem, Charlotte, Milton, Elizabeth city, Lincolton, Tarboro', Concord, Rutherfordton, Stokesville, Morganton, Wadesboro', and Elizabethtown.

Newbern is the metropolis, and Raleigh the capital.

Education. North Carolina University is at Chapel Hill, near Raleigh.

North Carolina is one of the original States.

Boundaries. Bounded north and east by North Carolina and the Atlantic, and south and west by Georgia.

Mountains. The Alleghany mountains cross the north-western part of this state. The highest summit is called Table mountain.

Face of the country. The face of the country, along the sea-shore, is level and marshy; in the north-western part there are some ridges of the Alleghany mountains.
