A. seconded by Thomas Wilson, Esq. it was -Resolved, That the Report now read be received, and printed under the direction of the Committee. On a Motion by the Rev. Mr. Leifchild, seconded by Mr. William. Freeman Lloyd, it was Resolved, That the Thanks of this Society be given to the Right Honorable Lord Carrington, for his acceptance of the Office of President of this Society, in the room of the late Right Honorable Lord Barham deceased; and likewise for his Lordship's liberal donation of Fifty Pounds. On a Motion by the Rev. David Ruell, M.A. seconded by Mr. Samuel West, it was Resolved, That the Thanks of this Society be given to the Committee for their important services during the last year. On a Motion by the Rev. Jabez Bunting, seconded by the Rev. Robert Newton, it was Resolved, That the cordial Thanks of the Society be returned to the Rev. William Marsh, M.A. for his impressive Sermon, preached yesterday, before the Society; and that he be requested to allow it to be printed with the Report. On a Motion by Mr. Thomas Smith, seconded by Mr. William Marriott, it was Resolved, That the following gentlemen be a Committee for the year ensuing. (See Page 9.) On a Motion by the Rev. Mr. Newell, it was Resolved, That the Thanks of this Meeting be given to Samuel Favell, Esq. for his kind and able conduct in the Chair this day. A SERMON, &c. From a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures; which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, through faith which is in CHRIST JESUS.-2 Timothy, iii, 15. As reason raises us above the beasts that perish, so religion connects us with the highest order of beings, and dignifies our rational nature. If by the one we possess the power of acquiring knowledge, it is by the other we learn its proper use, and attain the greatest happiness. "That the soul be without knowledge, is not good" éven for the present life. But it is a tremendous evil for it to remain destitute of that wisdom which alone can form it for the life to come. Indeed, religious knowledge will be found of immense importance for both worlds. It renders man blessed and a blessing. Whilst ignorance leaves him the dupe of every delusion, and a prey to every vice. The depravity of human nature, and the progress it may make in sin, when the influence of |
