marks on fubjects of geography and general literature, with moral and political obfervations occafionally interfperfed. The author, whoever he may be, feems to have confiderable skill in delineating characters, but this portion of his work will create less interest here than on the other fide of the Atlantic. We are glad that the proprietors have reprinted it in this country, and fhould be in. clined to fuppofe that they will find it answer their purpose.

ART. 38. Curfory Remarks occafioned by the horrible Affaffination of the Right Hon. Spencer Perceval. 8vo. 1s. 6d. Hatchard.

[merged small][ocr errors]

This fmall tract will be found to contain much found reasoning and judicious remark. It is probably written by one who has written much before. We agree with this refpectable author, that principles are now afloat which tend to diforganize fociety; and that Bellingham's conduct did not arife from the want of reafon, but from perverted reason. It is the common duty of all claffes to restrain the further progrefs of anarchy, by fupporting the eftablished government. Above all, let it not be forgotten that our arch enemy is on the watch like a roaring lion to feize every opportunity of our difcontents among ourselves for our destruction. We would have this excellent tract univerfally read.

ART. 39. The New Young Man's Companion; or the Youth's Guide to general Knowledge; defigned chiefly for the Benefit of private Perfons of both Sexes, and adapted to the Capacities of Beginners; in Three Parts.-Part First contains Directions for Writing, for making a Pen, for holding it, &c.; for making Ink; Spelling; English Grammar; Logic; Rhetoric; Compofition; Directions for Inditing Letters; Superfcriptions and Addresses; Significant Initial Letters; ufeful Abbreviations.-Part Second, contains Common Arithmetic; Vulgar and Decimal Fractions; Square and Cube Roots; Book-keeping, by fingle and double Entry; Receipts; Promiffry Notes; Inland and Foreign Bills of Exchange; Drawing.-Part Third, contains a Definition of Algebra; Geome try; Menfuration of Superficies; Menfuration of Solids; Board Meafure; Timber Measure; Artificer's Work; Land Surveying: Aftronomy, Geography, Chronology, and Hiftory; Phyfics, or Philofophy and Chemistry; Mineralogy, Botany, and Zoology; Religion and Religious Denominations. Embellished with Four Copper Plates and Twenty-eight Wood Cuts. By John Hornfey, Author of A Short Grammar of the English Language:""The Child's Monitor, or Parental Inftru&tion ;"—"The Book of Monfyllables, or an Introduction to the Child's Monitor ;" and The Pronouncing Expofitor, or a New Spelling Book." 356 pp. 45. York, Wilfon; London, Longman. 1811.

Yes, this is all very true, all these subjects are treated of, and fome of them in a very intelligent and clever way, particularly the

fubjects

fubjects of Arithmetic and Writing, and we fincerely hope that the author keeps an academy, where he has an opportunity of inculcating the fentiments he delivers on politics and religion, for who is there of our readers who can difapprove the following fentiments:

"The greatest and wifeft of men, in all ages and countries, were renowned for their piety and virtue. Thofe in our own nation, that have been unquestionably the most eminent for learning and knowledge, were likewife the moft eminent for their adher ence to the Chriftian Religion; witnefs Boyle, Locke, Newton, Addifon, Bacon, and others.-The examples of fuch, among many other first names in philosophy, are a fufficient evidence that religious belief is perfectly compatible with the clearest and most enlarged understanding." P. 52.

ART. 40. An Account of the interefting Island called Heligoland, its Inhabitants, &c. 8vo. 37 PP. 2s. 6d. Sherwood and Co.

1811.

This very fmall island, which the extraordinary circumftances of the times have forced into notice, and even rendered an important place, is altogether fo extremely fingular, as to deserve a defcription, better than many others of much greater extent and tenfold population. It may in fome refpects be compared to an enormous ship moored in a harbour, and its inhabitants feem to have molt of the ordinary characteristics of failors. Its wideft circumference is not more than two miles and a half, and the houses are built in parallel ftreets, the afcent from the lower to the upper being effected by a wooden staircase of 191 fteps. These steps are fo formed that a cow can be driven up or down them, but not a carriage of any fort is used in the island. The inhabitants fubfift almoft entirely by fishing, or by acting as pilots into the Wefer, the Elbe, and the Eyder, which are all difficult navigations; and the island maintains one of the most important light-houses in Europe. Not lefs than two thoufand perfons fubfift upon this fmall fpot, and fubfift in a way which they confider as comfortable, chiefly on fifh and vegetable food: to which they are fo partial that one of their principal men is faid to have obferved, that Cuxhaven was a place he fhould like to live at, but added, that "they must fare very poorly there-every day meat."

This little narrative is clear and intelligible, and a continuation is promised, refpecting the capture of it, &c. which, if published, we have not yet feen.

ART. 41. Memoirs of the Life and Character of the late Rev. George Whitefield, M. A. of Pembroke College, Oxford, and Chaplain to the Right Hon. the Countess Dowager of Huntingdon; faithfully feleted from the original Papers, Journals, and Letters; illuftrated by a Variety of interefting Anecdotes from the beft Au thorities.

thorities. Originally compiled by the late Rev. John Gillies, D. D. Minister of the College Church of Glasgow. Second Edition, revifed and corrected, with large Additions and Improvements, by Aaron C. Seymour, Author of Letters to young Perfons, Svo, 98. Dublin. 1811.

We efteem it our duty to announce this work, which has been tranfmitted to us, though we do not ufually introduce fecond ditions in our Review. It is reprefented to contain large additions, and what are denominated improvements of the preceding edition," and will, we have no doubt, be highly acceptable to the nume rous friends and followers of the perfonage whofe life and actions are here, it is to be prefumed, faithfully delineated.

ART. 42. Aufwahl Vorzueglicher, &c.-German Extrañs, from the best German Authors; with the English Words at the Bottom of the Page, and a Dictionary at the End for tranflating into Englijb. By George Crabb, Author of English and German Dialogues, a complete Introduction to the Knowledge of the German, Et. Second Edition, revifed and enlarged. izmo. About 300 pages. 75. Boofey, &c. 1811.

We have frequently had occafion to speak of Mr. Crabb's books for the affiftance of ftudents in the German Language. This, however, we believe, has hitherto escaped our obfervation. It appears to us a judicious work, well calculated to answer its intended purpose, and of a convenient form. It has a double title, and a double preface in German and English. The Ger man is printed in the appropriate letter.

ART. 43. Obfervations on the most important Subjects of Edneation, containing many useful Hints to Mothers, but chiefly intended for private Governeffes. 12mo. 5s. 6d. Darton and Harvey.

1812.

There is a great deal of good fenfe, folid remark, and ufeful inftruction in this little volume. Nothing can be more true than that the difficulty of finding refpectable fituations for young women has induced many to undertake the arduous office of inftruct. ing children, who have been by no means qualified. The writer of this work candidly acknowledges that the herfelf was once in this predicament, and she has accordingly published the refult of her own experience for the benefit of thofe who may be fimilarly circumstanced with herfelf. The fubjects difcuffed are precifely what they ought to be, and follow in the order which a fenfible and judicious mind would naturally fuggeft. Beginning with the study of the Scriptures, the reader is conducted to all thofe fubjects which are neceffarily comprehended in a system of religious and moral education. Perhaps the author goes a little out of her

sphere

fphere in undertaking to comprehend remarks on Gibbon in her Manual; but it is altogether fo good, and will be found fo useful, that it should not be understood, that it is at all intended by the above remark to detract from the very high commendation which the intent and execution of this volume obviously deserves,
