INTRODUCTION.

IN prefacing the following manual of family devotion with a few observations, I am complying with a request from one to whom I would not willingly deny anything in my power to grant.

The little work does not come before the public with any claim to originality, or with the slightest pretensions to supersede any of those useful volumes of prayers with which the press abounds.

This abundance is itself a cause for congratulation; as it affords evidence of the increased attention to an important branch of Christian duty. Much as it is to be lamented that many families, both in the higher and lower ranks of society, are living in entire neglect of family worship; yet it cannot be denied that this neglect is far less general than it was many years ago.

This change may well be regarded as one among the favourable signs of the times, amidst many which are unfavourable. It is a silent, unostentatious, but beneficial movement in the right direction: and
