MONUMENTA GERMANIAE HISTORICA. In.de ab anno Christi quingentesimo usque ad annum millesimum et quingentesimum. Auspiciis Societatis aperiendis Fontibus Rerum Germanicarum Medii Aevi.

Edidit GEORGIUS HEINRICUS PERTZ. Serenissimi Britanniarum et Hannoverae Regis Tabularius. Voluine I. folio, with eight Plates, 31. 38. On vellum paper, 41. 145. 60. This important Historical Collection first occupied the attention of the Prussian Government, who in the year 1819, founded a Society for bringing to light the earliest German historical records. Their business was either by pecuniary support or literary labour, to assist in searching Public Libraries, and the Government Archives, for such historical documents as would lay open the events of the Middle Ages which have so long beea lost to the world, and the facilities afforded by all the various Governments cannot be sufficiency acknowledged.

Among the members, besides the patronage of the most distinguished Nobles of the German empire, the Society gained weight and attention by the assistance of the celebrated Niebuhr aud Bölling, von Aretin, von Berckheim, vou Plessen, and von Wangenheim ; with these were shortly afterwards associated Smidt, Dümge, Büchler, Schlosser and Pertz

Under the direction of this learned body, every public institution throughout the empire came forward with engerness to make kuown whatever appeared of worth in their Manuscript Annals, registered either in their libraries or among the State Papers : and now after eight years of research and arrangement, they have under the more immediate direction of Dr. Pertu, brought before the public the First VOLUME, in which are contained the following Aonals :| Annales Sancti Amandi Tiliani Lau- 28 Annales Weisremburgenses.
