The End of the First Volume.

A Catalogue of the WORKS of the Reverend Dr SAMUEL CLARKE, in the Order of Time, in which They were published.

I.

ACOBI Rohaulti Phyfica, &c. Tranflated from the French into Latin, with Large Annotations: In 8vo. first published in 1697. Of this there has been already four Editions, in Every one of which Improvements have been made, especially in the laft, 1718.

II. Three Practical Effays on Baptism, Confirmation, and Repentance, 1699. Five Editions of this have been printed.

III. Some Reflections on that part of a Book called Amyntor, which relates to the Writings of the Primitive Fathers, and the Canon of the New Testament. A small Tract first published 1699. without a Name; and fince, added to Dr Clarke's Letter to Mr Dodwell, &c.

IV. A Paraphrase on the Four Evangelifts, with Critical Notes, &c. That on St Matthew was firft published, 1701. A Second Volume on St Mark and St Luke followed in 1702: and after this a Third Volume on St John. They were foon all reprinted together, in Two Volumes, 8vo. An Eighth Edition has been lately published.

V. A Difcourfe concerning the Being and Attributes of GOD; the Obligations of Natural Religion; and the Truth and Certainty of the Chriftian Revelation, &c. These were the Sermons He preached at Mr Boyle's Lecture, 1704, 1705. They were printed in Two diftinct Volumes; The Former, in 1705. The Latter in 1706. Since That, They have been printed all together in One Volume, and have pass'd thro' Nine Editions. In the 4th VOL. I.

and 5th Editions were added feveral Letters to Dr Clarke, from a Gentleman, relating to the first Part of this Book, with the Doctor's Anfwers. In the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Editions were added, A Difcourfe concerning the Connexion of the Prophecies, &c. And an Answer to a Seventh Letter concerning the Argument à Priori.

VI. A Letter to Mr Dodwell about the Immortality of the Soul, and the Judgment of the Fathers, &c. first printed in 1706. After this, foon followed Four Defences of It, in four several Letters to the Author of the Remarks on the forementioned Letter. They are all printed together in a 5th Edition: And the Anfwer to Amyntor added to Them.

VII. Ifaaci Newtoni Optice. This is a Tranflation of Sir Ifaac Newton's Optics, from the English into Latin: first published in 4to. 1706. Afterwards in 8vo. 1719.

VIII. C. Julii Cæfaris quæ extant, &c. 1712. This is a very Pompous and Beautiful Edition, in Folio, of Cafar's Commentaries, accurately compared with the Best MSS. and illuftrated with the Doctor's Notes. This Book was afterwards reprinted, for common Ufe, in 8vo. 1720.

IX. The Scripture-Doctrine of the Trinity, In Three parts, &c. In 8vo. Firft published, in 1712. Afterwards, there was a Second Edition, with fome Alterations, in 1719. And a Third Edition in

1732.

X. Three fhort Papers, occafioned by the Complaint of the lower House of Convocation against the Forementioned Book: viz. A Reply to the Extract of Particulars made by the Lower-houfe: A Paper laid before the Bishops: A Paper delivered to the Bishop of London: All printed in a little Piece called

called an Apology for Dr Clarke, 1714. Together with Part of a Letter from Him to a Friend.

XI. A Letter to the Reverend Dr Wells, in Anfwer to his Remarks upon the foregoing Treatife,

XII. A Reply to the Objections of Robert Nelfon, Efq; and an Anonymous Writer; being a Commentary on forty Texts: Together with an Answer to the Remarks of [Bp Gaftrel] the Author of fome Confiderations upon the Trinity, &c. 1714.

XIII. Dr Clarke's Anfwers to Three Letters writt to Him by a Clergyman concerning his ScriptureDoctrine of the Trinity; Published, together with the Letters, by that Clergyman himself, 1714.

XIV. A Collection of Papers which paffed between the late learned Mr Leibnitz and Dr Clarke, relating to the Principles of Natural Philosophy and Religion: To which are added, Letters from Cambridge to Dr Clarke, Concerning Liberty and Neceffity, with the Doctor's Answers: And, Remarks upon a Book entitled, A Philofophical Enquiry concerning Human Liberty, 1717. 8vo.

XV. A Letter to the late Reverend Mr R. M. [ Mayo] concerning his plain Scripture-Argument. XVI. A Letter to the Author of a Book entitled The True Scripture-Doctrine of the Trinity, continued and vindicated; Recommended first by Mr Nelson, and fince, by Dr Waterland. Thefe Two little pieces were published, 1719. at the End of a Traft of Another Author, entitled, The Modeft Plea.

XVII. The Modest Plea, &c. continued: Or, A Brief and Distinct Answer to Dr Waterland's Queries, relating to the Doctrine of the Trinity, 1720. XVIII. Obfervations on Dr Waterland's Second Defence of his Queries, 8v0.1724.

XIX. Seventeen Sermons on feveral Occafions, 8vo. 1724 Eleven of which never before printed. Of this Collection there is a Third Edition, 1734. With the Addition of A Sermon preach'd at the Parish-Church of St James's, Apr. 18. 1725. upon the Erecting a Charity-School, for the Education of Women-Servants.

XX. A Letter to Mr Benjamin Hoadly, F. R. S. occafioned by the Controverfy relating to the Proportion of Velocity and Force in Bodies in Motion. Published in the Philof. Tranf. No 401. 1728.

XXI. Homeri Ilias. Græcé & Latiné. Annotationes, &c. This was the laft Piece He published, viz. The Twelve Books of Homer's Ilias, with the Translation accurately corrected, and Learned Notes, in 1729. in 4to. The remaining Twelvė Books have been published with the Notes of Dr Samuel Clarke, and fome Additions, by Mr Samuel Clarke his Son, in 4to. 1732. A Second Edition of the whole Iliad was published in Two Vol. 8vo. 1735and a Third Edition in Two Vol. 8vo. 1740.
