EURIPIDES, HECUBA; THUCYDIDES VII.

1. Translate :

οἱ Θάσιοι σύμμαχοί ποτε ἦσαν τῶν ̓Αθηναίων. χρόνῳ δὲ ὕστερον ἀπέστησαν αὐτῶν, διαφοράν τινα ἔχοντες περὶ ἐμπορίων καὶ μετάλλων. καὶ ναυσὶ μὲν ἐπὶ Θάσον πλεύσαντες οἱ Αθηναῖοι ναυμαχίᾳ ἐκράτησαν, καὶ ἐς τὴν γῆν ἀποβάντες ἐπολιόρκησαν τὴν πόλιν. ἔπεμψαν δὲ ἐπὶ Στρυμόνα, ὅς ποταμός ἐστιν ἐν τῇ ἀντιπέρας Θρᾴκῃ ἀπέχων οὐ πολὺ τῆς Θάσου, μυρίους οικήτορας αυτῶν τε καὶ τῶν συμμάχων ἐκελευσαν δὲ αὐτους χωρίον τι οἰκίζειν, ὅπερ ἐκαλεῖτο τότε μεν Εννέα Οδοί, νῦν δὲ Αμφίπολις. τούτου οὖν τοῦ χωρίου οἱ οικήτορες ἐκράτησαν. ἔπειτα δὲ προελθόντες ἐς τὴν μεσόγειαν τῆς Θράκης διεφθάρησαν ἐν Δραβήσκῳ ὑπὸ τῶν ἐπιχωρίων.

2. Decline fully ὄρος, ἔρυμα, ἤπειρος, φύσις, ὅρος, ναῦς, κέρας.

3. Parse and give the principal parts of the following : ἀποδρᾶναι, ἀποκτείνωσι, δεδιότες, ἐλήφθησαν, παρεδόθησαν, δεδημένους, ἔφασαν.

4. Translate, with short notes. EURIPIDES, Hecuba, 380-401. THUCYDIDES, VII., c. 17.

5. Give a brief outline of the Sicilian expedition and the events which led to it.

6. Translate :

· (i) If having were as sweet as getting, the rich would be greatly distinguished above the poor in blessedness.

(ii) It was a decision among the soldiers, if when the army went out, any one took booty by himself, what he took was common property.

(iii) After having weighed all this, vote for what you think will benefit the state.

(iv) Socrates caused his disciples to abstain from what was unjust and shameful, not only when they were seen by men, but also when they were in solitude.

1. Translate :—

ἢ ταῦτ ̓ ἄριστα καὶ πόλει σωτήρια,
στρατῷ τε θάρσος τῷδε πυργηρουμένῳ,
βρέτη πεσούσας πρὸς πολισσούχων θεῶν
αὔειν, λακάζειν, σωφρόνων μισήματα ;
μήτ' ἐν κακοῖσι μήτ' ἐν εὐεστοῖ φίλῃ
ξύνοικος εἴην τῷ γυναικείῳ γένει.
κρατοῦσα μὲν γὰρ οὐχ ὁμιλητὸν θράσος,
δείσασα δ ̓ οἴκῳ καὶ πόλει πλέον κακόν ;

2. Decline all the nouns and parse the verbs in the preceding passage.

3. Compare the rules for the translation of indirect speech into Greek with that of Latin.

5. Translate and comment on the following:

(i) εἰ μὴ Πρόξενον οὐχ ὑπεδέξαντο, ἐσώθησαν ἄν. Under what circumstances may el où be used?

(ii) σκόπει, μὴ σοι πρόνοι ̓ ᾖ τοῦ θεοῦ φυλακτέα.

(iii) δυστάλαινα τἄρ ̓ ἐγώ, εἴ σου στερηθώ.

(iv) περιεμένομεν οὖν ἑκάστοτε, ἕως ἀνοιχθείη τὸ δεσμωτήριον.

6. Translate:

(i) He said that within twenty days he would either bring them alive or kill them where they were.

(ii) He asked whether any one was wiser than I.

(iii) Pericles said that Archidamus was his friend, but that he had not been made his friend to the injury of the state.

(iv) The fear was great lest the Peloponnesians, as they sailed by, even if under the circumstances they had not been thinking of remaining, might destroy the cities.

(v) I beg you then to remain with us ; as there is not one whom I would hear more gladly than you.

(vi) While you are enacting laws, you must look to see of what kind they are; but after you have enacted them, you must guard and use them.

1. Translate into English :

"Aussitôt que les arbres ont développé leurs fleurs, mille ouvriers commencent leurs travaux. (i) Give fully the passé défini, futur, and impératif of the verbs in italics.

(ii) Conjugate throughout the verb "there to be," y avoir. (iii) State, with exceptions, if you know of any, the gender of nouns ending by in, ment, osse, au.

2. Translate into French :

The seasons seem to be changing; last year, even in the middle of May, the trees were in many places almost leafless, and very few flowers were to be seen. This year the same thing takes place; after a very mild winter, we are having a very cold spring with east winds. They cause a great deal of illness all round the country, and people with delicate chest do well not to go out.

3. Write the rule concerning the conjugation of verbs ending by ourir and indre.

4. Translate Picciola, p. 127, 1. 10 to 1. 40.

5. Distinguish between voile, ange, rose, manche, cartouche, œuvre, livre, carpe, Pâques, vase, mousse, crêpe, pendule, whether used in the masculine or in the feminine gender.
