7. Translate :

When several days had elapsed, and he had ordered corn to be brought into the winter quarters, he was suddenly informed by his scouts that all the people had gone off in the night from that part of the town which he had given up to the Gauls, and that the mountains which hung over it were occupied by a very large force of the Seduni. It had happened for several reasons that the Gauls suddenly formed the design of renewing the war and cutting off that legion.

5. Explain what is meant by the phrases Oratio Recta and Oratio Obliqua. Put into both Latin and Greek, first in Oratio Recta, then in the Oratio Obliqua, the following sentences:

It is no wonder that our city is mad, seeing that it pays no attention to religious duties. The energy of the enemy will crush our impious carelessness. Our allies have promised that they will not interfere, but had it been otherwise they could never have saved us.

6. Translate :

(ii) οὐ πρότερον πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὸν πόλεμον ἐξέφηναν, πρὶν ἐνόμισαν. (iii) οὐκ οἶδα ὅ τι ἄν τις χρήσαιτο αὐτοίς.

(iv) οἴομαι ἄν ὑμᾶς μέγα ὀνήσαι τὸ στράτευμα, εἰ ἐπὶμεληθείητε ὅπως ἀντὶ τῶν ἀπολωλότων ὡς τάχιστα στρατηγοὶ καὶ λοχαγοὶ ἀντι

κατασταθώσιν.

5. Translate into Greek :

(i) If he had written, I should have come.

(ii) He says that this is true.

(iii) He said that he would do this.

(iv) If he should wish to do this, he would be able.

(ν) All speech, if deeds are wanting, appears vain and useless.

(iv) συνετύγχανε πολλαχοῦ διὰ τὴν στενοχωρίαν τὰ μὲν ἄλλοις ἐμβεβληκέναι τὰ δ ̓ αὐτοὺς ἐμβεβλῆσθαι. δύο τε περὶ μίαν ξυνηρτῆσθαι.

(ν) ἐκείνους ἀπεστερηκέναι, εἰ καὶ κρατοῖεν, μὴ ἄν ἔτι σφᾶς ἀποτειχίσαι.

6. Translate :

(i) I would never advise the city to make this peace as long as a single Athenian shall be left.

(ii) Some one may say that finding fault is easy, but that showing what ought to be done is the duty of an adviser.

(iii) It is said that Apollo gave a response to Alcmaeon, that he should inhabit this land.

(iv) Whenever he wished to do a thing he always did it. (v) He shows them how they can avoid suffering punishment.

7. Compare briefly the characters and policy of Cleon and Nicias.
