(a) Probably we now approach the last six months of Christ's ministry, when that of Galilee closes with chap. vi. Give a short account of the Feast of Tabernacles, and explain Christ's allusion to some of its ceremonies. Comment on His refusal to go up to the feast. By which road did he eventually journey? Whom does St. John call "the Jews"? How does Christ seem to have been regarded by the populace? Comment on "the brethren of the Lord." Show that at this time the Sanhedrim had resolved on the death of Christ, but were for the present restrained. (b) Give the probable date of 1 and 2 Thess. With what part of St. Paul's history do these letters synchronize? Show that 2 Thess. was written (i) to correct a misapprehension arising from 1 Thess. ; (ii) to comfort them under affliction; (iii) to exhort against disorderly companions. Which is its prophetic section? In what other Epistles is the subject of Antichrist approached? Explain "Mystery of lawlessness." (Revised Version preferable.) III. (a) "Our nature corresponds to our external condition, otherwise there would be no possibility of human life or happiness." What presumption does this afford that our condition of probation here is a desirable moral discipline fitting us for another life? How does Butler argue that the design of Providence is to enable us to go through our probation, not to save us from danger, and that our future condition shall be the result of "what we would do? Give his examples that practical habits are strengthened, while passive impressions are weakened by repetition. Of what use, then, are the latter? (b) On what does Wisdom ground her law, and what is her manifest axiom ? Give others less manifest, but universally acknowledged. What is the first law of Reason? How far has she been able to discover moral duties? By what natural measure may we try our actions? Distinguish between the sentences of reason. By what marks may her laws be known? Why are they so ill observed? What follows their observance and trans-. gression, and by what names are these consequences known? What do they pre-suppose? (c) How does Paley prove that the Epistle to the Galations was written by the Apostle Paul, and not by some Christian acquainted with his remarkable conversion who was desirous of personating him? Name the collated passages proving that St. Paul's direct assertion that the obligations of the Jewish law had ceased even for Jews, is borne out by his conduct as narrated in Acts. |
