(a)

1. What particulars do we gather from Chaucer in his Knight's Tale with regard to Ipolita, Capaneus, Creon, and Perotheus? Where is Cithea?

2. Illustrate Chaucer's habit (i) of contracting words, and (ii) of pronouncing the e final contrary to our present custom. In what cases is the final e in Chaucer usually elided?

3. In which of Shakespeare's plays do we hear of Theseus and Ipolita? What part do they take in the play?

4. Write out in good modern prose the passages: Knight's Tale, 298-310, 441-445, 90-93.

5. Explain the following words and phrases:

To love par amour; maat; His nekke lith to wedde; murye ; Wel hath fortune y-torned the thedys; I noot which hath the wofullere myster; That stemede as a forneys of a leede; stound; leeve; me lust ful evele pleye; a dedly chere.

(b)

1. After reading Essay XIII., what inferences do you think Bacon would have drawn as to the duke senior's character if he had been present at his first interview with Orlando?

2. Paraphrase:

3. Explain fully

1. What was Mahomet's Miracle? What point does Bacon use it to illustrate? How does Bacon mention Busbechius? and for what purpose?

2. Why does Bacon consider nobility necessary to monarchy? How does it affect a sovereign for good?

3. Explain the following with reference to the context :

(i) "In evil, the best condition is not to will, the second not to can.

4. In what sense does Bacon use the following words-busy, mountebank, derive, estate, still, character, close, bravery, plausible? (d)

1. Give the meaning of the term Epic poetry. Is Paradise Lost a true epic?

2. Give a brief account-critical and descriptive-of the religious poetry of this period (1625-1674). Who were its chief writers ?
