PREFACE

HIS edition of the Metrical Psalms and Paraphrases with Tunes

a

has been prepared by a Committee consisting of representatives of the Church of Scotland, the Free Church of Scotland, the United Presbyterian Church, and the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.

The selection of tunes has been made entirely from the books at present in use in these Churches. As the object aimed at has been to provide a metrical psalter with which 'The Church Hymnary' may be combined in congregational use, all tunes common to these two books appear in identical form in each, as regards both melody and harmony.

At the close of the Psalms will be found a doxology in each metre for optional use at the end of a psalm or part of a psalm. Doxologies appear to have been sung by the Reformed Church of Scotland from an early period, and they are found as 'Conclusions to the Psalms' in editions of the Scottish Psalm-book from 1595 onwards.

The tunes have been arranged alphabetically under their respective metres, but there has been provided an index of tunes classified according to their devotional character, so that, if for any reason it is found necessary to depart from the adaptations given at the head of each psalm, conductors may, by the help of this index, select readily another suitable tune. In this index the chants are classified likewise, and references given to those psalms or portions of psalms for which each chant will be found suitable.
