we find such phrases as the night of tears and the dawn of gladness. "Weeping may endure for the night, but joy cometh in the morning."

To any whose spirits are wrapped in gloom these words are addressed by one who is no stranger to sorrow. May the "Father of mercies, the God of all comfort, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God,"* bless these words to the consolation of his people, so that they may be enabled to say, "At midnight I will arise to give thanks to thee because of thy righteous judg

ments."+

"IT is thy title, O Lord, and only thine, that thou givest songs in the night. The night is a sad and doleful season. As it is in bodily pains and aches, that they are worse towards night, so it is in the cares and griefs of the mind. They assault us most when they are helped on by the advantage of an uncomfortable darkness. And surely as music sounds best in the night, so those heavenly notes of praise which we sing to thee our God in the gloomy darkness of our adversity cannot but be most pleasing in thine ears."
