The number of Believers increasing at Jerufalem, the Apostles ordain feven Deacons, who should diftribute the Alms of the whole Church to the Widows, and poorer fort of Believers. Stephen, one of thefe Deacons, having confounded fome that difputed with him, is by them falfly accused of blafphemy, and brought before the Council, where he reprehends their rebellion and murthering of Christ. Whereupon they caft him out of the City, anft stone him; he in the mean time praying for them.

A great perfecution of the Church at Jerufalem follows after the death of the first Martyr Stephen.

Philip, one of the 7 Deacons, preacheth at Samaria, and converteth many; worketh miracles, and healeth the fick. Simon the Sorcerer, feeing the wonders that are done by Philip, believeth, and is baptized.

The Apoftles at Jerufalem hearing that Samaria had received the faith, fend thither Peter and John to confirm and enlarge the Church. The Apoftles by prayer and impofition of hands, confer the Holy Ghoft on all Believers. Simon Magus offers them Money, that he may receive power of conferring the fame, whose impiety is Tharply reproved by Peter. Having completed their Miniftry in those parts, they return to Jerufalem.

An Angel fendeth Philip to teach and baptize the Ethiopian Eunuch.

Saul, a violent Perfecuter of all that call on the Name of Jefus, and one who confented to the death of Stephen, goes now towards Damafcus, with commiffion from the High-prieft and the Council, to apprehend all Chriftians in thofe parts, and to bring them bound to Jerufalem; on the way he is miraculoufly converted by a voice from Heaven; and three days after baptized by Ananias at Damafcus, where he preached the Gofpel of Chrift with great boldnefs, to the astonishment of thofe that knew upon what defign he was fent thither.

Saul having preached the Gospel at Damafcus a long time, the Jews lay wait to kill him, but he efcapeth from thence, and comes to Jerufalem, there he fees Peter and James the brother of our Lord, Gal.I. 18. and abides with them fifteen days. Here he speaks boldly in the Name of Jefus, and difputes with the Grecians, or rather Jews that ufed the Greek Tongue, Thefe alfo confult how they may kill him.

While Saul prayeth in the Temple, he is in a Trance, and the Lord appears unto him, and bids him to XXII. 17. depart from Jerufalem because they will not receive his teftimony; adding that he will fend him to the Gentiles.

Saul leaving Jerufalem, goes to his own Country Tarfus, and from thence travels into Syria and Cilicia.

Peter vifits the Churches of Judea, Galilee, Samaria, c. at Lydda he cureth Aneas of the Palfie; and at Joppa reftoreth Tabitha to life.

At Cefarea, Cornelius a Centurion, by Prayers and Alms, finds favour in the fight of God, and is commanded by an Angel to fend for Peter now at Joppa. God by a vifion teacheth Peter not to defpife the Gentiles; and being fent for by Cornelius, goes and preacheth Chrift to him, and a great company that were met at his houfe, while Peter preacheth, the Holy Ghoft falls upon them all; and immediately the Apostle baptizeth them.

Peter, at his return to Jerufalem, is accused by thofe of the Circumcifion, for converfing with the Gentiles, but he declares to them his Vision, and the whole matter concerning Cornelius, and they glorifie God, for granting to the Gentiles alfo repen

The Church at Jerufalem unman Em- derstanding this, and that the number of Believers pire. increased exceedingly, fends Barnabas thither to confirm them; he goes to Tarfus, and takes Saul along with him to Antioch, where they continue a whole year, converting multitudes to the faith. About this time, James the brother of John is beheaded by the command of Herod Agrippa. He alfo imprifoneth Peter, whom an Angel delivers upon the prayers of the Church. This fame Herod, not long after fpeaking to the People at Cefarea, fome of them cry out, It is the voice of God, and not of man, and immediately an Angel of the Lord fmites him, because he gave not the glory to God, and he is eaten of worms, and dieth.

Barnabas and Saul fet forward in their preaching XIII of the Gospel. They plant the Chriftian faith in Seleucia, Cyprus, and other places. At Paphos they preach the Gofpel to Sergius Paulus, Governor of that Country; Elymas a Sorcerer withstanding them, and endeavouring to turn away Sergius from the faith, at Saul's rebuke ftruck blind. From this time Saul is always called by his new name Paul; he preacheth at Antioch, the Gentiles believe, but the Jews gainfay and blafpheme. Whereupon he and his Affiftants turn to the Gentiles, and come to Iconium.

At Iconium they are perfecuted and ready to be ftoned. From hence they fly to Lyftra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia. At Lyftra, Paul healing a Cripple, the multitude cry out, that the Gods are come down, and call Barnabas, Jupiter, and Paul, Mercurius, and would have facrificed to them, had not the Apoftles, with clothes rent, run in among them, and affured them, that they were Men like themfelves. Soon after there come Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who excite the People against them. Paul is by the furious multitude ftoned, and drawn out of the City as dead; but whilft the Disciples stand about him, he rifeth up, and the next day departs with Barnabas to Derbe.

In this year, perhaps at this very time, Paul was caught up into the third heaven, and heard unfpeakable words, fourteen years before he wrote his fecond Epiftle to the Corinthians.

Paul coming to Derbe, finds there Timothy, whom XVI. (because his Mother was a beliving Jew, though his Father a Gentile) he caufeth to be circumcifed, and takes him along with him. He is by a vifion admonifhed to go into Macedonia; coming to Philippi the chief City of that part of Macedonia, he converts Lydia, cafteth out of a certain Maid-fervant a fpirit of divination, whofe Mafter lofing a confiderable gain thereby, brings Paul and Silas before the Magiftrates; these cause them to be whipped and imprifoned; but at midnight, Paul and Silas praying and finging Pfalms, the doors of the prifon fly open, and their bonds are loofed the Jaylor ready to kill himself, is converted to the Faith, and baptized the fame night, with his whole family. Next day the Magiftrates come themselves, and pray them to depart from the City.

:

From Philippi Paul takes his journey through XVII. Amphipolis and Appollonia, and comes to Theflalonica, where he finds a Synagogue of the Jews; there he preacheth three Sabbath days; fome believe, others perfecute him. Leaving Theffalonica, he comes to Berea, and foon after arrives at Athens,

Paul at Corinth meets with Aquila and Prifcilla, XVIII. not long before banished from Rome, by the Decree of Claudius. Here he continues a year and fix months, and thence writes to the Theffalonians.

Paul is accufed by the Jews, and brought before Gallio, Proconful of Achaia, who refufeth to be Judge in a Controverfie about Religion, and fo drives them away from the Judgment-feat.

Paul departs from Corinth, and paffeth to Ephefus, thence he fets out towards Jerufalem, that he may be at the Feaft; he lands at Cefarea, goes down to Antioch, and comes into the regions of Galatia and Phrygia, confirming the Disciples in all thofe places.

Paul returns to Ephefus, difputes daily in the School of Tyrannus, and continues preaching there, and the parts there-abouts.

He writes his Epiftle to the Galatians.

At Ephefus Demetrius a filver-fmith, jealous of his gain, raiseth a tumult againft Paul, which is appealed by the Town-Clerk.

Paul purpofing to go directly from thence into A&ts XX. Syria, that he may carry the Collections to Jerufalem, the Jews lay wait for him; he understanding this, thinks it beft to return into Macedonia the fame way he came, and thence to pafs into Afia.

After the days of unleavened bread, Paul fails from Philippi, and comes to Troas, there he reftores Eutychus to life. A BRIFF TABLE

Of the interpretations of the proper Names which are chiefly found in the Old Testament, wherein the first number fignifieth the Chapter, the second the Verse.

Hereas the wickedness of time, and the blindness of the former age bath been fuch, that all things

named in Scriptures have been forgotten, and now feem strange unto us, and the Names of divers of infants that should ever have fome godly advertisements in them, and should be memorials and marks of the children of God received into his houfbold, have been hereby alfo changed and made the figns and badges of idolatrie and heathenifh impiety, we have now fet forth this Table of the Names that be most used in the Old Teftament, with their interpretation, as the Hebrew importeth, partly to call back the godly from the abufe, when they shall know the true Names of the godly Fathers, and what they fignifie, that their children now named after them, may have teftimonies by their very names, that they are within that faithful family, that in all their doings had ever God before their eyes, and that they are bound by these their names to ferve God from their infancy, and have occafion to praise him for his works wrought in them, and their fathers, but chiefly to restore the names to their integrity, whereby many places of the Scriptures and fecret mysteries of the holy Ghost shall better be understood. We have medled rarely with the Greek names, because their interpretation is uncertain, and many of them are corruppted from their original, as we may alfoo fee thefe Hebrew names fet between these two marks () of this table, which have been corrupted by the Grecians. Now for the other Hebrew names that are not here interpreted, let not the diligent Reader be careful: for he shall find them in places most covenient amongst the annotations: at left fo many as may Seem to make for any edification, and understanding of the Scriptures.
