PREFACE.

HAVING in the Preface to my First Volume of "Outlines," dwelt at some length upon the Divine Inspiration of the Scriptures because this lies at the very root and foundation of the whole subject of Prophetic enquiry; I shall, in the Preface to this Volume, in amplification of the subject, now consider, not only how to "Search the Scriptures generally, but also how to read, so as to understand, the Prophetic Word in particular.

We are indeed expressly directed by our blessed Lord Himself, to search the Scriptures. "Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me. And ye will not come to Me, that ye might have life." The word for "search" here is èpevvâte, from the verb épevvâw, which means to seek out, to track, to trace, to explore, to investigate. It is in the imperative, and not in the indicative, mood, as some would read it for the second person plural indicative is never used at the beginning of a sentence without the pronoun, vueìs, you, or some other word, as où, not: while the imperative is frequently so used; as for instance in John xiv. 11, TɩσTEVETÉ μοi őтi èyà év т Tатрì, "Believe"-not "ye do believe ". "Me that I am in my Father;" and in John xv. 20, μvημoνεύετε τοῦ λόγου οὗ ἐγώ εἶπον ὑμῖν, “ Remember "not “ ye do remember "-" the word that I said unto you."
