Continuation of the STORY of the YOUNG CRIMINAL.

LEASE to remember, reader, that I had promifed to dine at the fame tavern in a few days, and my mafter's fon put me in mind of it the night before the appointment. I told him the refolution I had made, that I faw the ridiculousness of debauchery, that I defpiféd it, and had determined never to be led into it again. But he fooned fhamed me out of my resolution, and rather than be thought ridiculous, I made myself wretched.

We met as polite, as friendly as pof. fible; we fupped as ufual, but we did not feem to be in the fame flow of fpirits for drinking as before. The novelty of the company was worn off, every body were then old faces to one another--they confidered me as one of them, they had no more left to do--they were palled-jaded with riot, fick of liquor -women were propofed-no-they objected to them at laft fome perfon mentioned throwing a main—it was ap· proved of, and box and dice immediately ordered.

I fat by while they played at Hazard for fome time, I was feveral times urged to try my fortune; they told me what I had to do, and which I faw others do-I ventured, took the box, and threw in five hands. This emboldened me. When it came to my turn again, I threw with fpirit; and, at the breaking up of the party, found my felf pofleffed VOL, HI,

As I was better verfed in figures than any of the rest of my companions at that club, I did not in the least fear my being able to be their fuperior in making or taking bets, and consequently fuppofed, from that knowledge, I shou'd make my fortune. And this is the true principle of a gamefter; for, young as I was, hazard playing was no more pleasure to me, than what a common ftrumpet receives from a half hours dalliance with a ftranger-but as there was a profpect of getting money by it, I was determined to purfue it.

And herein I must caution parents of too strongly inculcating the love of noney, and the power of money, into their childrens minds-they become avariti ous by fuch prejudices-the opinion grows with their growth, and strengthens with their ftrength; and at last, they think nothing to be too mean, or too mifchievous, fo money is to be got by it.

Women of the town are paradoxes ; they are both avaritious and extrava
