PREFACE.

AMONG the first gems which present themselves on the opening of our 'Casket' are the "two celebrated pieces of Addison, illustrative of what the Author has inculcated in prose," and which Dr. Dibdin pronounces "perfect master-pieces of their kind." They are well known under the following verses:

When all thy mercies, O my God,

[blocks in formation]

effusions, with more of the soul of true poetry about them than in the whole of his other metrical compositions." Our series is continued by selections from both the ancient and modern schools of Poesy; with what success they have been made must be left to the decision of my readers. A few Originals grace the pages toward the close of the volume, from the elegant pens of Archdeacon Wrangham, Dr. Sisson, Hermione, Malvina, T. and C. of Bridlington, &c.; all of whom are, with due deference, requested to accept of my best thanks.
