6 If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, [whether they be] young ones, or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, 7 thou shalt not take the dam with the young [But] thou shalt in any wise let the dam go and take the young to thee; that it may be well with thee, and [that] thou mayest prolong [thy] days.

8

When thou buildest a new house, then thou shalt make a battlement for thy roof, that thou bring not blood upon thine house, if any man fall from thence.

9 Thou shalt not sow thy vineyard with divers seeds : lest the fruit of thy seed which thou hast sown, and the fruit of 10 thy vineyard, be defiled. Thou shalt not plough with an ox 11 and an ass together. Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, [as] of woollen and linen together.

12

13

Thou shalt make three fringes upon the four quarters of thy vesture, wherewith thou coverest [thyself.]

If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, 14 And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I 15 came to her, I found her not a maid: Then shall the father

of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth [the tokens of] the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in 16 the gate And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her : 17 And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech [against her,] saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these [are the tokens of] my daughter's virginity. And they shall 18 spread the cloth before the elders of the city. And the elders 19 of that city shall take that man and chastise him; And they shall amerce him in an hundred [shekels] of silver, and give [them] unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil name upon a virgin of Israel and she shall be his 20 wife; he may not put her away all his days. But if this thing be true, [and the tokens of] virginity be not found for 21 the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put away evil from among you.

22

:

If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, [both] the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away 23 evil from Israel. If a damsel [that is] a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with 24 her; Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, [being] in the city; and

25

the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay 26 with her shall die: But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; [there is] in the damsel no sin [worthy] of death for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, 27 even so [is] this matter: For he found her in the field, [and] the betrothed damsel cried, and [there was] none to save her. If a man find a damsel [that is] a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be 29 found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty [shekels] of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt.

CHAP. XXIII.

Who may, or who may not enter into the congregation; uncleanness

to be avoided in the camp.

E that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the 2 LORD. A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD.

3

An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they 4 not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever: Because they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor of Pethor of Mesopota5 mia, to curse thee. Nevertheless, the LORD thy God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy 6 God loved thee. Thou shalt not seek their peace nor their prosperity'all thy days for ever.

7

Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he [is] thy brother: thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian; because thou wast a stran8 ger in his land. The children that are begotten of them shall enter into the congregation of the LORD in their third generation.

9 When the host goeth forth against thine enemies, then keep thee from every wicked thing.

10

If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp: 11 But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash [him

self] with water: and when the sun is down he shall come 12 into the camp [again.] Thou shalt have a place also without 13 the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad: And thou shalt

have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt 14 turn back and cover that which cometh from thee: For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee.

Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which 16 is escaped from his master unto thee: He shall dwell with thee; [even] among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shall not oppress him.

19

There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a sodomite of the sons of Israel.

Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both of these [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon 20 usury; Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

21

When thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not slack to pay it; for the LORD thy God will surely 22 require it of thee and it would be sin in thee. But if thou 23 shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in thee. That which

24

gone out of thy lips, thou shalt keep and perform; [even] a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth. When thou comest unto thy neighbour's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes thy fill at thine own pleasure; but 25 thou shalt not put [any] in thy vessel. When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour's standing corn.

CHAP. XXIV.

The law of divorce; a new married man is to be exempt from war and civil offices for the space of a year; of pledges; of man stealers; of leprosy; the hire of a servant is to be given; of doing justice to the friendless; and of charity.

HEN a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and

it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give [it] in her hand, 2 and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's [wife.] 3 And [if] the latter husband hate her, and write her a bill of divorcement, and give [it] in her hand, and sendeth her out of his house; or if the latter husband die, which took her [to 4 be] his wife Her former husband, which sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that [is] abomination before the LORD: and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which the LORD thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance.

When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: [but] he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken.

No man shall take the nether or the upper millstone to pledge for he taketh [a man's] life to pledge.

If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the chil dren of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him then that thief shall die; and thou shalt put evil away from among you.

Take heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you as I commanded them, [so] ye shall observe 9 to do. Remember what the LORD thy God did unto Miriam by the way, after that ye were come forth out of Egypt.

10

When thou dost lend thy brother any thing, thou shalt not 11 go into his house to fetch his pledge. Thou shalt stand abroad, and the man to whom thou dost lend shall bring out 12 the pledge abroad unto thee. And if the man [be] poor, thou 13 shalt not sleep with his pledge. In any case thou shalt de

14

liver him the pledge again when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his own raiment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteous unto thee before the LORD thy God,

Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant [that is] poor and needy, [whether he be] of thy brethren, or of thy strangers 15 that [are] in thy land within thy gates: At his day thou shalt

16

17

give [him] his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it ; for he [is] poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of the stranger [nor] 18 the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge: But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence therefore I commanded thee to do this thing.

19

When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the 20 work of thine hands. When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the 21 stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean [it] afterward it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and 22 for the widow. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
