Blind Bartimaeus Cries

BY JULIUS SCHNORR, THE RECENT GERMAN MASTER.

+

"And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight."-Mark, 10, 51.

HEN the people realized that Jesus was indeed

going up to Jerusalem for the passover, they began to follow Him in great numbers. The danger that He ran from the priests was at least partly understood. Hence men argued that His going thus deliberately meant that He was more powerful than the priests, and that now at last He would assert His power and destroy His enemies. Moreover it would seem that Lazarus accompanied Jesus; and the desire to gaze upon this man risen from the dead was as intense as that to adore the majesty of Jesus. Thus when the Master came to Jericho to ascend the mountains to Jerusalem, a huge throng accompanied Him on this final stage of His journey.

On the road He performed the last compassionate cure of all the thousands which had glorified His life. A blind beggar, or perhaps two, sat by the wayside; and as the crowd approached, the foremost beggar, Bartimæus, cried aloud, "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me." Men bade the beggar hush and stand aside: they imagined they were marching in the procession of a conqueror, such as trampled upon beggars. But Bartimæus only repeated his call. To Jesus that appeal meant more than all the applause, it was heard above all the din. He summoned the blind man to His side. "Thy faith,"

said He, "hath made thee whole."

ACTS II-DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

1701

23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place. 26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Chapter 2

1 The apostles, filled with the Holy Ghost, and speaking divers languages, are admired by some, and derided by others. 14 Whom Peter disproving, and shewing that the apostles spake by the power of the Holy Ghost, that Jesus was risen from the dead, ascended into heaven, had poured down the Holy Ghost, and was the Messias, a man known to them to be approved of God by his miracles, wonders, and signs, and not crucified without his determinate counsel and foreknowledge: 37 he baptizeth a great number that were converted. 41 Who afterwards devoutly and charitably converse together: the apostles working many miracles, and God daily increasing his church.

ND when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.

6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galileans?

8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

14¶ But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:

15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

"The Revised Version changes the first clause of this verse to "And when this sound was heard."
