It has been revised and enlarged, in the hope that it may supply a real need in the religious services of other colleges and schools, and of churches which desire to make the responsive reading of Scripture a brief, simple, and profitable part of Common Worship. The selections have been made and arranged with the following objects in view: To give a wider range to the service by including appropriate passages for antiphonal reading from all parts of the Bible; to omit the imprecatory Psalms; to make each selection complete in itself, with a central thought, and not to attempt a mosaic of disconnected passages; to divide the verses only when it helps to make the mean ing clear and to keep the portion read by the people from being too long; to vary the length of the selections so that it may be easy to find one to fit a short service when necessary; and to arrange the readings in relation to the great truths of religion, so that they may be instructive and helpful to faith and life. The Lord's Prayer, The Apostles' Creed, and the Ten Commandments have been included in the book; a response to be sung after the Commandments, and a doxology for use at the close of the Responsive Readings, have been added for those who may wish to have these forms of worship in a single volume.
