ITANY-A general supplication. PENTATEUCH-The five books of Moses, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

GENESIS-Means generation, or birth; the beginning of all things, which is described in this book, with other events which occurred in the first two thousand three hundred years of the world.

EXODUS-Going out, or going forth: this book relates the history of the Jews going out of Egypt, &c. and contains a period of about one hundred and forty years.

LEVITICUS-Book of Levitical cere

monies, or an account of the laws and ceremonies of the priesthood, who were chosen from the tribe of Levi, and thence called Levites; it treats also of laws relating to persons and things, and the transactions in this book occupy a period of about a month.

NUMBERS-Called so on account of the several numberings of the people which were practised during the space of time in which the transactions mentioned in it were accomplished, which was about forty years.

DUETERONOMY-A recapitulation of all the laws given by God through Moses, for the government of the children of Israel. Moses is said to have written this book during the last two months of his life.

SEPTUAGINT-A Greek version of the Old Testament, made by seventy-two interpreters.

HIERARCHY-A sacred government—

"the hierarchy of heaven."

SABAOTH-Hosts, armies.

TRANSUBSTANTIATION-A change of substance: it implies that notion the Roman Catholics erroneously hold, that the bread and wine in the sacrament are changed into the real body and blood of Christ, called "The real presence."

CONSUBSTANTIATION-The Union of our Blessed Saviour with the Sacramental Elements, according to the Lutherans.

RUBRICK-The directions given in Italics, at the heads of the different offices, prayers, &c. in the Book of Common Prayer; so called because they were originally distinguished by red letters; rubrick meaning red.

TRANSFIGURATION-Change of form: in the transfiguration of our Saviour his form appeared as the form of God.

REGENERATION, OR NEW BIRTH---This means being born again, or a total change of disposition, as from vice to virtue; in which case a man is said to be born again, because his nature is so much altered

that he is a new creature; he has put off the old man, which is the man of sin, and put on the new man, or the man of righte

ousness.

ADOPTION-Means taking by choice some child as your son, who is not so naturally; so God adopts the children of men and permits them to call him father, although naturally they are not his children; because their nature is sinful, and no sinful nature can be in relation with God but before he adopts them he gives them grace, which produces in them regeneration; hence the term adoption by

grace.

GRACE-Favour, privilege, virtue. INSPIRATION-Suggestion, or impulse, from heaven. The writers of the Scriptures wrote by inspiration; i. e. the Spirit of God operated upon and directed them when they wrote; therefore they are called Inspired writers.

HERESY--A fundamental, or essential error in religion.

SCHISM-A separation from the mother Church.

ESSENCE-Nature, being, existence,

spirit.

ESSENTIAL--That which is necessary to the existence of any being, or to the foundation of any system.

SYSTEM-Scheme, theory, method. RECUSANT-One who refuses any terms of communion or society.

BIGOT-One blindly devoted to any party or system.

SUPERSTITION---A fastidious or unreasonable attention to trifles, and making them matters of importance; false devotion, or false religion.

DEVOTEE---One righteous overmuch. FREE THINKER---One who does not believe in Revelation.

REVELATION-That information which reason cannot supply us with, but which is revealed or imparted to us from heaven. ATHEIST-One who denies the exist

ence of a God.
