THE MONTHLY PACKET.

NEW SERIES.

JANUARY, 1893.

"TEMPUS FUGIT.'

I.

THERE came a Spirit from the North loud crying,

Whose voice wailed thro' the woodlands deep and low, Seeming to say, 'Another year is dying

And fading in the mists of Long Ago.' While the great forest, sighing sadly, heard it

And tossed its branches to the rain-swept sky, Groaning, as if some mighty wind had stirred it,

And ever wailed the voice, ‘Prepare to die!'

II.

But Time, the great destroyer, likewise healeth,

And sends again the Spring, whose quickening breath, Calm as a summer dawn o'er Nature stealeth,

And wakes the woodlands from their sleep of death, And the soft Spirit voice again is ringing,

In sweetest music, over hill and plain, New life and joy to all creation bringing, Seeming to say to Nature, ‘Live again!'
