LESSON. Joel ii. 23. 27.

HUS saith the Lord God: Be glad you children of Sion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you a master of righteousness, and he will make the morning and evening rain come down upon you as formerly. And your barn floors shall be full of corn, and your presses overflow with wine and oil. And you shall eat and be filled; and you shall praise the name of the Lord your God, who hath wrought wonders in your favour; and my people shall not be confounded for ever. And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel and I am the Lord your God, and there is no other; and my people shall not be confounded for ever, saith the Lord Almighty.

GOSPEL. Luke v. 17. 26.

:

T that time: It came to pass on a certain day Jesus sat teaching and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who came out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and from Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was ready to heal them. And behold, some men came bringing on a bed one sick of the palsy. And they endeavoured to bring him in, and lay him before him. And not finding which way to bring him in, because of the croud, they went upon the roof of the house, and let him with his couch down through the tiles, in the midst before Jesus. And when he saw their faith, he said: Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the Scribes and the Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this man, who speaketh blasphemy? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? When Jesus, knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them; What is it you think in your hearts? Which is easier to say: Thy sins are forgiven thee: or to say: Arise, and walk? But that you may know the Son of Man hath power on earth to forgive sins, he said to the man sick of the palsy, I say to thee: Arise, take up thy bed, and go home. And immediately rising up before them, he took his bed, on which he had lain, and went home glorifying God. And they all were astonished, and they praised God and filled with fear, saying: We have seen strange things this day. CREDO.

I. LESSON.

Joel ii. 28.

HUS saith the Lord God; I will power out my spirit on all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men see visions. And in those days I will pour out my spirit on my servants and hand-maids. And I will shew wonders in heaven, and on earth, blood and fire, and vapour of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood; before the great and dreadful day of the Lord cometh. And it shall be, that whoever calleth on the name of the Lord, shall be saved. Alleluia. V. John 6. 'Tis the spirit that giveth life; but the flesh availeth nothing.

II. COLLECT, Illo nos. Let thy Holy Spirit, O Lord, we beseech thee, kindle in our breasts that fire, which our Lord Jesus Christ brought on earth, and earnestly desired that it should burn. Who liveth and reigneth with thee in unity of the same.

II. LESSON. Lev. xxiii. 9. 21.

N those days; The Lord spoke to Moses, saying;

say

When you shall come into the land, which I will give you, and shall reap the corn: you shall bring sheaves of ears, the first-fruits of your harvest, to the Priest : who shall lift up the sheaf before the Lord, the day after the Sabbath, that it may be acceptable in your behalf, and he shall consecrate it to the Lord. And you shall reckon from the morrow after the Sabbath, in which you offered the sheaf of the first-fruits, seven whole weeks even to the morrow after the seventh week shall be expired, that is, fifty days : and thus you shall offer from all your houses, a new sacrifice to the Lord two loaves of the first-fruits, made of two tenths of leavened meal, and these you shall bake for first-fruits to the Lord. And you shall call this a most solemn and holy day; you shall do in it no servile work. This shall be a law for ever in all places of your abode, and in all your generations, saith the Lord Almighty'.

Alleluia. Job 26. His spirit hath adorned the heavens.

III. COLLECT. Deus, qui. O God, who, for the healing of our souls, hast commanded us to mortify our bodies by fasting: mercifully grant that we may faithfully serve thee both with body and soul Thro'.

III. LESSON. Deut. xxvi. 1. 11.

N those days: Moses said to the children of Israel;

Heanse daysraehataid Commandil you this day

When thou art come into the land, which the Lord thy God shall give thee for an inheritance; when thou shalt have got possession of it, and be settled in it; thou shalt take the first of all thy fruits, and put them in a basket and go to the place, which the Lord thy God shall chuse for the calling on his name; and thou shalt come to the priest, that shall be in those days, and say to him; I profess this day in the presence of the Lord thy God, who heard our voice, and had regard to our affliction, to our labour and oppression; who brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand, and a stretched out arm with great terror, with signs and wonders; and brought us into this place, and gave us a land flowing with milk and honey. And therefore now I offer the first-fruits of the land, which the Lord hath given me. And thou shalt leave them in the presence of the Lord thy God, and adore before the Lord thy God. And thou shalt eat with

joy of all the good things, which the Lord thy God hath given thee.

Alleluia. V. Acts 2. When the days of Pentecost were completed, they were all sitting together.

IV. LESSON. Lev. xxvi. 3. 12.

N those days: The Lord said to Moses: Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: If you walk in my precepts, and keep my commandments and do them, I will give you rain in its season, and the earth shall bring forth her increase, and their trees shall be loaded with fruit. Your harvest shall last till the vintage, and your vintage till seed-time: and you shall eat your bread in plenty, and dwell in your land without fear. I will give peace on your borders: you shall sleep, and there shall be none to disquiet you. I will remove all mischievous beasts, neither shall the sword pass through your borders. You shall pursue your enemies, and they shall fall before you. Five of you shall pursue a hundred others, and a hundred of you ten thousand; your enemies shall fall by your sword before you. I will look favourably upon you, and make you increase; you shall be multiplied, and I will confirm my covenant with you. You shall eat the oldest of your old stores; and when the new come, you shall cast away the old. I will fix my dwelling-place among you, and my soul shall not abandon you. I will walk amongst you, and be your God, and you shall be my people, saith the Lord Almighty.

Alleluia. V. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful; and kindle in them the fire of thy love.

V. COLLECT. Præsta, quæsumus. Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that we may so fast from meat, that we may likewise fast from all those vices, to which we are prone. Thro'.

V. LESSON. Dan. iii. 49.

N those days; The Angel of the Lord went down with Azarias and his companions into the furnace ; and he drove the flame of fire from out of the furnace, and he made the midst of the furnace as a breeze of wind with dew. But the flame spread all above the furnace nine and forty cubits; and it broke forth, and burnt those of the Chaldees, the servants of the King, whom it found

near the furnace, who had kindled it. And the fire touched not Azarias and his companions, it troubled them not, neither did it them any harm. Then those three, as with one mouth, praised, glorified, and blessed God in the furnace, saying;

Alleluia. V. Blessed art thou, O Lord, the God of our forefathers, and worthy of praise for ever.

Here is said the Gloria in excelsis.

VI. COLLECT. Deus, qui tribus. O God, who; in the behalf of the three young men, didst render harmless, the flames of fire; mercifully grant, that we thy servants may not be burnt by the flames of vice. Thro'.

RETHREN; Being justified by faith, let us have peace, with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ; by whom also we have access, through faith, to this grace, wherein we stand and glory in the hope of the glory of the sons of God. And not only so; but we glory also in tribulations, knowing that tribulation worketh patience, and patience trial, and trial hope. And hope confoundeth not; because the love of God is poured out into our hearts by the Holy Ghost, who is given us. TRACT. Ps. 116. Praise the Lord, all ye nations; and join in his praises, all ye people. V. For his mercy is confirmed upon us; and the truth of the Lord remaineth for ever.

GOSPEL Luke iv. 38. 44.

T that time; Jesus rising up to go out of the

Arue, went into the house of Simon. And the mother

in-law of Simon was ill of a great fever; and they besought him in behalf of her. And he standing by her commanded the fever, and it left hear; and getting up immediately she waited on them, and when it was sunset, all that had any sick of various distempers, brought them to him. And he laying his hands on each of them, cured them. And the devils went out of many, crying out, and saying; Thou art the Son of God; and he rebuked them, not suffering them to speak; because they knew he was the Christ. And when it was day, he went out into a solitary place, and the people sought him, and came to him, and detained him, that he might not depart from them. To whom be
