Pentecost, instead of the following Anthem, is said that of the twenty-fourth Sunday. At the MAGNÍFICAT. Anth. Jesus turning about and seeing her, said: Take heart, daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole. Alleluia. Ant. At Jesus conversus, et videns eam, dixit; Confide, filia, fides tua te salvum fecit. Alleluia. PRAYER. Collect at Mass, p. 238. N. B, There cannot be fewer than twenty-three Sundays between Pentecost and Advent; nor more than twenty-eight. The Office of the twenty-fourth is always said on that Sunday, which immediately precedes Advent. If there are any Sundays between the twenty-third and the last; the INTROIT, GRADUAL, OFFERTORY and COMMUNION, are taken out of the twenty-third Sunday. The rest as in the Sundays after the Epiphany. If there be only one Sunday between the twenty-third, and the last; office is of the sixth Sunday after the Epiphany. If there be two; it is of the fifth and sixth. If there be three; it is of the fourth, fifth, and sixth. If there be four; it is of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth. XXIV. Or last SUNDAY after PENTECOST. MASS. All as on the twenty-third Sunday, except: COLLECT. Excita. Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the hearts of the faithful; that becoming more zealous in the performance of good works, they may receive from thy goodness more effectual remedies for their disorders. Thro'. EPISTLE. Colos. i. 9. 14. RETHREN: We cease not to pray for you, and to beg that you may be filled with the knowledge of the will of God, in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of God, pleasing him in all things; being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to the power of his glory, in all patience and long suffering, with joy, giving thanks to God the Father, who hath made us worthy to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light and delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us to the kingdom of his beloved Son; in whom we have redemption, through his blood, even the remission of sins. A GOSPEL. Matt. xxiv. 15. 35. T that time; Jesus said to his Disciples : When you shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place; (he that readeth let him understand) then let them that are in Judea, flee to the mountains: and let him, who is on the house-top, not come down to take any thing out of his house? and let him, who is in the field, not go back to take his coat. And wo to those, that are with child, and give suck in those days. But pray ye your flight may not be in the winter, nor on the Sabbath. For the tribulation shall then be great, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world till now, nor ever shall be. And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would be saved; but out of regard to the elect, those days shall be shortened. Then if any one shall say to you; behold, here is the Christ, or there he is; believe him not. For false Christs and false prophets shall arise, and shew great signs and wonders, that even the elect (were it possible) would be seduced into error. Behold, I have foretold you of it. If therefore they shall say to you; Behold, he is in the desert, go ye not forth; behold he is in the closets; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and appeareth even to the west; so also shall be the coming of the Son of man. Wherever a carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered also. And presently after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be moved: and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven; and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with great power and majesty. And he shall send his Angels with a trumpet and a loud voice; and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the farthest parts of the heavens even to the utmost bounds of them. Now learn a parable from the fig-tree; when its branches are tender, and the leaves shoot forth, you know the summer is near; so also, when you shall see all these things come to pass, know 'tis nigh, even at your doors. Verily, I say to you; this generation shall not pass away, till all these things be done. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. CREDO. SECRET. Be merciful to us, O Lord, and receive the prayers and offerings of thy people: turn all our hearts to thee; that being freed from earthly concupiscence, we may come to desire heavenly pleasures. Thro'. POSTCOMM. Concede. Grant, we beseech thee, O Lord, that whatever vice our souls are subject to, may be cured by the virtue of the sacrament we have received. Thro'. VESPERS. At the MAGNIFICAT. Anth. Verily, I say to you, this generation shall not pass away, till all these things, come to pass; heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away, saith the Lord. Ant. Amen, dico vobis, quia non præteribit generatio hæc, donec omnia fiant; coœlum & terra transibunt, verba autem mea non transibunt, dicit Dominus. PRAYER. Collect at Mass, p. 263. III. SUNDAY after the EPIPHANY. COLLECT. Omnipotens. O Almighty and Eternal God, mercifully regard our weakness, and stretch forth the right hand of thy Majesty to protect us. Thro'. EPISTLE. Rom. xii. 16. B RETHREN; Be not wise in your own conceit; render to no man evil for evil; carefully do that which is good, not only in the sight of God, but in the sight of all men Live in peace, if it be possible; and, as far as in you lieth, with all men. Revenge not yourselves, my dearly beloved, but give place to anger; for it is written; Vengeance belongeth to me; and I will take revenge, saith the Lord. But if thy enemy be hungry, give him to eat; if he be thirsty, give him to drink; for doing thus, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. A GOSPEL. Matt. viii. 1. 13. T that time : When Jesus was come down from the mountain, a very great multitude followed him. And behold a leper came and adored him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus stretching forth his hand, touched him, saying: I will; be thou made clean. And forthwith his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus said to him; See that thou tellest no-body of this; but go, shew thyself to the priest, and make the offering ordered by Moses, for a testimony to them. And when he was entered Capharnaum, a centurion came to him, beseeching him, and saying: Lord, my servant is sick at home of a palsy, and is grievously tormented. And Jesus said to him; I will come and heal him. And the Centurion answering, said; Lord, I am not worthy that thou should'st enter under my roof; but speak only the word, and my servånt shall be healed. For although I am a man under subjection to others, yet, as I have soldiers under me, I say to one; Go thither, and he goeth: to another; Come hither, and he cometh: and to my servant, do this, and he doth it. And Jesus hearing this, wondered, and said to those who followed him; Verily, I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel. And I say to you; Many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; but the children of the kingdom shall be cast forth into outer darkness, where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said to the Centurion; Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it unto thee. And his servant was cured at the same hour. CREDO SECRET. May this offering, O Lord, we beseech thee, cleanse away our sins; and sanctify the bodies and souls of thy servants to prepare them for worthily celebrating this sacrifice. Thro'. POSTCOMM. Quos tantis. We beseech thee, Lord, that we, to whom thou vouchsafest the use of these great mysteries, may be made truly worthy to receive the benefit thereof. Thro'. VESPERS. At the MAGNIFICAT. Anth. Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus said; I will; be thou cleansed. Ant. Domine, si vis, potes me mundare; et ait Jesus; volo; mundare. PRAYER. Collect at Mass, p. 265. IV. SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY. COLLECT. Deus, qui nos. O God, who knowest, that through human frailty we are not able to subsist amidst so many dangers; grant us health of soul and body; that whatsoever we suffer for our sins, we may overcome by thy assistance. Thro'. B EPISTLE. Rom. xiii. 8. 10. RETHREN: Owe no man any thing, but to love one another; for he that loveth his neighbour, has fulfilled the law. For Thou shalt not commit adultery : Thou shalt not kill; Thou shalt not steal; Thou shalt not bear false witness; Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is comprised in these words: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The love of our neighbour doth no evil. Love therefore is the fulfilling of the law. A GOSPEL. Matt. viii. 23.27. T that time : followed him and behold there arose a great tempest in the sea, so that the ship was covered with waves, but he slept. And his disciples came to him, and awaked him, saying: Lord, save us, we perish. And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and gave his orders to the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. And the men wondered, saying: What manner of man is this, that the winds and the sea obey him? CREDO. Jesus going into a ship, his disciples SECRET. Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that the offering of this sacrifice may always cleanse our frailty from evil, and be a protection to us. Thro'. POSTCOMM. Munera. May thy gifts, which we have partaken of, O God, detach us from all earthly pleasures, and ever refresh and strengthen us with heavenly food. Thro'. VESPERS. At the MAGNIFICAT. Ant. Domine, salva nos, perimus; impera, et fac, Deus, tranquillitatem. Anth. Lord save us, we perish; give thy orders, O God, aud make a calm. PRAYER. Collect at Mass, p. 244. V. SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY. MASS. COLLECT. Familiam tuam. Preserve, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy family by thy constant mercy; that we, who confide solely in the support of thy heavenly grace, may be always defended by thy protection. Thro'. |
