XLIX. Glorying in the cross of Christ.

God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.- Gal. vi. 14-16.

L. Exhortations to be heavenly-minded. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection* on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.-Col. iii. 1—4.

LI. Various duties of Christians.

See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

Rejoice evermore.

Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.― 1 Thess. v. 15-18.

* Be always in the spirit, and often in the act of prayer and praise.

LII. Various exhortations to Christians.

Quench not the Spirit.* Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil.

And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.-1 Thess. v. 19-23.

*The influences of the Spirit are compared to fire, which purifies and enlightens the soul. There may be a reference to the fire on the altar. Beware of every thought, temper, word, or deed, that would tend to quench this fire, or lessen its power. preaching of the word.

Study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; that ye may walk honestly* toward them that are without and that ye may have lack of nothing. -1 Thess. iv.
