rence to one of the fathers, the fervant, who hated a lie, turned to the part quoted, and found the treachery of the Doctor, fhewed hi the quotation; but the Doctor, with his ufual ferocity, replied, "Write as I have ordered, no perfon will doubt my veracity or look over old mufty volumes to inform themselves." Sir, fays the trufty fervant, "If the religion we profefs is obliged to refort and have recourse to falfehood for its pillar or prop, I fhall never touch a pen more in fo rotten and villainous a caufe, but will inform myfelf and adhere to truth." He immediately fet about this great work, and, as he thought, the Papists had truth on their fide, he went for Douay, became a prieft, and returned on the miffion to England. Whether he was one that was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn, or in the country, for being a prieft, as numbers of the priests fuffered, I cannot take upon myself to fay. One work L thought to affift at, for the good of the proteftant caufe, which is now printing in weekly numbers, a folio, under the title of Ganganelli's Bible, with notes. Several of us thought him a fit perfon, being of all the popes more univerfally esteemed; fo that we found him a proper fubject to get a quick fale and double price, a fhilling per number. Had we put any other title, fixpence per number must have been the ftipend, and a lingering tedious fale, which would no wife anfwer the purpofe intended. We contrived the matter to ferve different purposes. First, to get a double portion of cafh, in a fhort time. Secondly, To gall the papifts,

papifts, in changing a papiftical Pope into a Deift. Thirdly, To turn Jews and Papifts into ridicule. Fourthly, To ftrengthen the protestant religion by the Deifm of the most diftinguished and exalted character, but whofe works bear a different tendency, cafting his threats against all, but in a mode peculiar to Ganganelli, which draws and invites to the Catholic Religion, lays it open to your view, which is the moft dangerous method to a pro-. teftant that believes Chrift. We obferved the evil. in this unhappy age, and concluded, abfolutely proper to publifh this Bible, with notes of Deifm, infidelity, and little fhort of Atheism.. In a word, we have metamorphofed the popish Pope into a Materialist..

What bold rap, ta, ta, tat, with tumult at our door? Perhaps, an Embaffage, if fo, do mungey, be wary, nincompoops and exert yourfelves and appear as men in your dignified characters, not like bumbailiffs, buffleheads, rafcalions, or fuch like beggar crew, you nincom poops; appear like. princes and receive them with an air of authority, that becomes your princely characters. I now wave my fceptre with a fmall inclining condefcendence. But hark, hufh, I dread fome ruffians. Who's there? anfwer, or, bodikins, life or death is your portion. Speak out, villains, or for ever after hold your peace. Oyes, oyes, oyes, all manner of perfons who have any demands on my goods or chattels, let them appear, or for ever after hold their peace. 1 am in difmay, frightened to death at this ftrange prefage. What

can it be? arm yourfelves; it cannot furely be the ghoft that I in fo legal a procefs have condemned to punishments evermore; I rob no man; Peter's chair is vacant, and who is fo proper as myfelf?

Hoft. Your eminence will excufe my intrufion, but according to our agreement the packet boat is ready with a fine gale for England. You have not a minute to delay.

Taylor. Your holiness's pontifical robes in the most elegant and, rich drefs. Will your holinefs be please to grant me the honour to try them on your facred perfon?

Luther. How dare you, firrah, faucy buzzard, robber of the hen-rooft, you clay-faced Swifs, fwarthy pig. I repeat, how dare you, or the like of that, do ye mungey, behave in the manner you do? rot ye, faucy minftrel, common stroller, with your gambols and gallanty-fhow.

Taylor. Your holinefs will be pleased, if you think meet, to compofe yourfelf, that your prefent ftory, which has rather fatigued the immenfity of your perfon, may, be a little abated; when, if your holinefs will permit to be enticed in a gentle manner to be undreffed, and be difincumbered from the weight of thofe minor robes, after which, and a fmall interregnum, at the wave of your imperial fceptre, your faithful flave will proceed with the moft refpectful diligence to enfhrine your moft facred and mighty holinefs, in your pontifical robes, the most elegant, rich, beautiful, fine, nice, charming, and coftly, perhaps, that ever was U here

heretofore placed on the facred fhoulder.

Amen.

Hoft. Unlefs you, Sir, immediately put yourself in sred in a condition to fet off in the packet boar, now ready, our contract is void, and fo adieu.

Luther. You, void of all grace, your infor lence proves the dregs from whom you are produced, fcum of a filthy neft of piffmires; avaunt, Satan, get thee hence in one moment, be gone, and never present yourself before my Imperial Holinefs evermore. Rattle-fnake, the rafcal is abfconded, my vehemence is abated; my friend, proceed to the decoration, in fo doing, no doubt, I fhall appear as the morning fun, fpringing out on his afcenfion from the arms of lovely Aurora, graced with ringlets of burnished gold.

Taylor. Your Holinefs will vouchfafe to perch one moment whilft we deliver you from your old, and put on your most fumptuous, and gor dious drefs; the world will truely declare you the golden Phenix, or none fo pretty,, bright Luminary.

Luther. Go to the ant, thou fluggard, confider her ways and be wife, that little piffmire puts her back to the burden without flinching, continually accumulates and with vengence attacks all invaders, the being wife, is a true copy of my felf.

Taylor. Your Holinefs would wish not to part the two Covenants, but rather clothe Aaron with Peter.

Luther. Aye, undoubtedly, or the like of that, do ye mungey, I fhall be enlarged, look ye, how

graceful,

graceful, and you really think me the Phenix, or the like of that, as the faying is, do ye mungey, that is, the luftre and fingular brightness of this our enlightened age. I will not difpute the matter, but yield my hearty confent. The harmonious jingling of Aaron's bells are delightful, vaftly in imitation, refembling the chimes of Weltminster-Abbey; they are excellently chofen, I value them highly. All things fit and agree exceedingly well. Now, if you have, as you have with the other parts, left a fufficient lurplus for the Treble Crown, to pass with ease over Aaron's Cap, I fhall think myfelf equipped and as richly embellifhed with these brilliant gimcracks, bedecked and bedizened, bedashed and befpattered, made fine, and as handfomely ornamented and accoutred and far furpaffing the Great Mogul, Grand Turk, Emperors of China, Perfia, and what not. I love a great foul, whofe law is truth, coupled with noble and grand fentiments. Thefe noble qualities, inherent in your lordship, has raised him to that ftupendous height you now behold. This is the great Jubilee, which commences from this day, and fhall remain one year univerfally throughout the world. My mouth has pronounced, the decree is gone forth. So be it, or the like of that; I am what I am, do ye mungey, nincompoop.

Taylor. All things fit and agree exceeding Jemmy, and of the very rich and beft materials. Don't your Holiness observe all are of the beft, and fit like clock-work. Your Holi
