and the governor afked him, faying: "Art thou the King of the Jews?" Jeius faith to himi "Thou fay't it." And when he was accufed by the chief priests and ancients, he answered nothing. Then Pilate faith to him: "Doft thou not hear how great teftimonies they alledge against thee?" And he answered him to never a word; fo that the governor wondered exceedingly. Now upon the folemn day the governor was accustomed to releafe to the people one prifoner, whom they would. And he then had a notorious prifoner, that was called Barabbas. They therefore being gathered together, Pilate faid: "Whom will you that I releafe to you," Barabbas, or Jefus, who is called Chrift?" for he knew that, for envy, they had delivered him. And as he was fitting on the judgmentfeat, his wife fent to him, faying; "Have thou nothing to do with that juft man, for I have fuffered many things this day in a dream, becaufe of him?" But the chief priests and ancients perfuaded the people, that they fhould afk Barabbas, and make Jesus away. And the governor anfwering, faid to them: "Whether will you have of the two to be releafed unto you? "But they faid, "Barabbas." Pilate faith to them: "What fhall I do then with Jefus, that is called Chrift?" They fay all let him be crucified." The governor said to them;

Why, what evil hath he done?" But they cried out the more, faying; "Let him be cru cified." And Pilate feeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, taking water, washed his hands before the

Then he releafed to them Barabbas, and, having fcourged Jefus, delivered him to them to be crucified. "Then the foldiers of the governor taking Jefus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band, and ftripping him, they put a fcarlet cloak about him. And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right-hand; and bowing the knee before him, they mocked him, faying, "Hail, king of the Jews." And fpitting upon him, they took the reed, and ftruck his head. And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify him. And going out they found a man of Cyrene, named Smon; him they forced to take up his Crofs. And they came to the place that is called Golgotha, which is the place of Calvary. And they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall. And when he had tafted, he would not drink. And after they had crucified him, they divided his garments, cafting lots, that the word might be fulfilled which was fpoken by the prophet, faying, "They divided my garments among them, and upon my vefture they caft lots. And they fat down and watched him;, and they put over his head his caufe written: This is Jefus the King of the Jews. Then were there crucified with him two thieves; the one on the right hand, and the other on the left. And they

In like manner alfo the chief prieft, with the fcribes and ancients mocking, faid, "He faved others, himself he cannot fave; if he be king of Ifrael, let him now come down from the crofs and we will believe him. He trufted in God, let him deliver him now if he will have him; for he faid, I am the Son of God.". And the felf fame thing the thieves alfo, that were crucified with him, reproached him with. Now from the fixth hour there was darknefs over all the earth, until the ninth hour; and about the ninth hour Jefus cried with a loud voice, faying: Eli, Eli, lamma Sabacchani ?" that is,

My God, my God, why haft thou forfaken me?" And fome of them that stood there and heard, faid, " This man calleth for Elias;' and immediately one of them running, took a fponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put on a reed, and gave it him to drink. And the others faid; Let be, let us fee whether Elias will come to deliver him." And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom, and the earth quaked, and the rocks were rent; and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the faints that had nept, arofe, and coming out of the tombs after his refurrection, came into the holy city and. appeared to many. Now the centurion and they that were with him watching Jefus, hav

Then Judas, who betrayed him, seeing that he was condemned, repenting himself, brought back the thirty pieces of filver to the chief priests and the ancients, faying, "I have finned, in betraying innocent blood.' But they faid, "What is that to us? look thou to it." And calling down the pieces of filver in the temple, he departed: and went and hanged himfelf. Pfalm 41. My enemies fpeak evil of me; when fhall he die, and his name perish? and if he come to fee me, he fpeaketh vanity; his heart gathereth iniquity to itself, when he goeth abroad, he telleth it; all that hate me whisper together againft me; against me do they dev fe my hurt. An evil difeafe, fay they, cleaveth faft unto him; and now that he lieth, he fhall rife up no more. Yea, my own familiar friend, in whom I trufted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me. But thou, O Lord, be merciful unto me, and raife me up, that I may requite them. By this I know that thou favoureft me, because my enemy doth not triumph over me. And as for me, thou upholdeft me in my integrity, and fetteft me before thy face for ever. Bleffed be the Lord God of Ifrael, from everlafting, and to everlafting. Amen and Amen.” The accomplishment of this prophecy was fulfilled in the council of our chief priests and ancients, for putting to death the Meffiah, confiftent with our other fcriptures, and the treafon

"And it came to pass, when Jefus had ended all these words, he faid to his difciples: You know that after two days fhall be the Pafch, and the Son of man fhall be delivered up to be crucified: then were gathered together the chief priests and the ancients of the people into the palace of the high-prieft, who was called Caiphas;. and they confulted together, that by fubtlety they might apprehend Jefus and put him to death. Then went one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, to the chief priests, and he faid to them; What will you give me, and I will deliver him unto you? But they appointed him thirty pieces of filver, and from thenceforth he fought opportunity to betray him. And on the first day of the Azymes the difciples came to Jefus, faying; Where wilt thou that we prepare for to eat the Pasch? But Jefus faid, Go ye into the city to a certain man, and fay to him; The Mafter faith, my time is near at hand, I will keep the Pasch at thy house with my difciples. And the difciples did as Jefus had appointed them, and they prepared the Pafch. Now when it was evening, he fat down with his twelve difciples, and whilst they were eating, he said; Amen, I say to you, that one of you is about to betray me. And they being very much troubled, began every one to fay, Is it I, Lord? But he answering, faid; He that dippeth his hand with me in the difh, the fame fhall betray me.
