in the new or law of Chrift; fo that the tranflation of the Jewish or first covenant transferred and made over to the new, is clear and abfolute, and which with out controul has been in the poffeffion of the chriftian church from its inftitution or commencement as we obferve it this day.

Rulers and Fathers of the Jews to Rabbi Mofes. Dear Brother, your citation we shall attend and doubt not of convincing and efface from your mind, that gloomy, difmal, obscure, irrational, inglorious, and diabolical jargon, imperceptibly injected, by two old heretical minifters, Luther and Calvin, one a parfon the other an elder, of time-ferving fects; whofe irrational, contradictory, vague, and ironical, ideas, mixed diforderly, with luft, and impiety, the effluvia communicating, the venomous malignant particles, or quality, to your scattered thoughts, feized, feduced, bound and made captive thofe loofe and weightlefs notions inherent in man, particularly when the intellectual faculties or organs have loft their force, fprightlinefs, and powers through age, worn out, mouldered, decayed, and worm-eaten by long ufe, affiduity, and in the laft ftage of decrepitude, nay, fcarce a body difcernible, a fhadow, phantom, fpectre, or fancied vifion. We notice from whence your chimera took its rife, from which maggot you would not only reprobate your nation (from the inftitution of of the chriftian feduction), you also wish to injure and deftroy her exiftence, forming in idea, the first covenant of the Jews to this fimile of

an egg, fay you, the egg-fhell is abfolutely needful, and cannot be difpenfed with, in order to encompass and fuftain the fruit or virtue within, until it is removed; which once accomplished, the shell being no longer neceffary, is either burned or thrown on the dunghill and rejected. So the Jewish covenant was proper and adviseable, as the Meffiah had allotted, to take his human nature from the pofterity of Abraham. But when the Fabric or grand Edifice was manifefted and finished, the scaffold being no longer needful, but an impediment or eyefore, was removed, and is extinct, abolished, and crumbled into its original infignificance, and the virtue, force, or contract, transformed, removed, fet over, and transferred to the fecond or chriftian covenant, the church of Christ, according to your logic or theology, the Jewish covenant is become a dried egg-fhell, skeleton, correfponding to the dry-bones in the valley of Jehofephat, as the prophecy of Ezekiel marks out, and as the fame prophet tell us was revived by the fecond covenant for which you contend to be the church of Chrift. To-morrow at ten we truft, by unanswerable reasoning, and laws of our Fathers, to remove your doubts.

FIFTEENTH CONFERENCE.

Mofes, Boy, Rulers, and Notaries.

Rulers. THAT venerable name of Rabbi

we still hope to prevent your re

probating, and that by our remonftrance you will ftill perfevere and preferve the facred character of Doctor, and with your noted zeal continue (the remains of an unblemished life) to inculcate Ifrael in the law of our fathers, and fet at nought the chriftian herefy, which has been for eighteen centuries the bane or deftruction of our nation.

Mofes. In what confifts the chriftian herefy?

Rulers. Jefus their Head, being a Jew, foreclofed the law of his fathers, and fet up a novelty unknown to Ifrael. This novelist, tho' of mean parentage, and unlearned, by an unknown influence, over-ruled our doctors and chief men, who, finding their laws and tradition trampled on, themfelves despised, and the whole world in crowds fwarming to his dif courfes, the ftupendous and aftonishing miracles which he repeatedly performed, with art magic came to the refolution of bringing him to condign punishment, which they effected in his moft ignominious death, in order to undeceive and convince the deluded populace of their error, in fuppofing him the Meffiah, that being the time Ifrael expected his glorious manifeftation and their deliverance from the Roman yoke, which they then groaned under.

Boy.

Boy. Was the complaint removed when the Jews effected this bloody tragedy?

Rulers. It was not. For, during a three years miffion, he had so far inculcated and improved his difciples in his maxims and fecrets, that prefently after his crucifixion, they became a formidable part of the Jewish nation, and then spread themselves among the heathen, as a cancer eating out old opinions and inftilling their new herefy, reftlefs to the laft degree (as Alexander) labouring to bring the universe under the chriftian banner. t. And though the whole force of the Roman empire was employed three hundred years to root up this impious fect, yet, we find the emperor Conftantine planting and erecting this very ftandard † with the highest encomiums in the most respectable place of the capitol; and from thence forward this ugly fign has been revered, to Ifrael's deftruction, as we are witneffes.

Mofes. What caufe could influence the world like an impetuous torrent from all parts to run with infatiable and greedy delight, to gaze with unremitted defire on the object of their wishes?

The

Rulers. This question will not be a difficult query, if we reflect that scarce an hour paffed but fome miracle or cure was effected. blind received their fight, the deaf heard, the lame walked, the dumb fpoke, thofe poffeffed were healed, the dead raised, and many other wonders too numerous to be dwelt upon, which being above the common laws of nature, bewitched the giddy multitude and ravished them from the law and commandments. Evil ceased with Jefus, no doubt a few days would have funk the matter in oblivion; but unluckily the poifon was deeply rooted, so that to this day the venom cannot be extracted. Peter and his affociates, by ftratagem, a few days after the decease of their Meffiah, pretending they were infpired from above, fpoke (though unlettered) every language, fo that the rabble were aftonished to hear thefe Galileans fpeak to them in their native tongue. They influenced the unpolished multitude, as their leader had done, curing all diseases, the very fhadow of Peter, the mob was perfuaded, had this virtue. Thofe in power arraigned them, and inflicted ftripes to rid them of their madness, which they embraced with joy and firmnefs. They were imprisoned, but when releafed (by no one knows what fpirit) found the more obdurate and impenitent, and daily enlarging, that both Jews and Romans were compelled to use every feverity to rid the world of this peft of novelifts or innovators, but to no purpose; for, as we obferved, three hundred years from the commencement of this fect, the emperor Constantine took the infection from a †. He said, feen by himself and army at noon-day, far brighter than the fun, with this infcription, By This Conquer; and he being successful against his colleagues (who were heathens) established by edict his novelty, which has cruelly tormented the world, as we know this day. What gives and keeps alive this madnefs, is the fecret influence they have over the fenfes and laws of nature; for in every age we find thefe workers
