ABIDE with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see:

O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free,
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea;
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless,
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness:
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy
victory?

I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes, Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies;

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

JESUS THE LORD OF ALL.

ALL hail the power of Jesus' name!

Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crown him Lord of all.

Crown him ye martyrs of your God,
Who from his altar call;

Extol the stem of Jesse's rod,
And crown him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
A remnant weak and small,

LYTE.

Hail him who saves you by his grace,
And crown him Lord of all.

Ye Gentile sinners ne'er forget
The wormwood and the gall;
Go, spread your trophies at his feet,
And crown him Lord of all.

Let every nation, every tribe,
On this terrestrial ball,
To him all majesty ascribe,
And crown him Lord of all.

O! that with yonder sacred throng,
We at his feet may fall,

There join the everlasting song,
And crown him Lord of all.

PERRONETT.

ANGELS SENT TO MINISTER.

AND is there care in heaven? and is there love In heav'nly spirits to these creatures base, That may compassion of their evils move? There is; else much more wretched were the

case

Of men than beasts. But O the exceeding grace

Of highest God! that loves his creatures so,
And all his works with mercy doth embrace,
That blessed angels he sends to and fro,
To serve to wicked man,-to serve his wicked foe.

How oft do they their silver bowers leave,
To come to succour us, that succour want!
How oft do they with golden pinions cleave
The flitting skies, like flying pursuivant,
Against fowle fiends to ayd us militant.
They for us fight, they watch and duly ward,
And their bright squadrons round about us
plant;

And all for love, and nothing for reward: O! why should heavenly God to man have such regard?

SPENSER.

5 AROUND THE THRONE OF GOD.
AROUND the throne of God in heaven

Thousands of children stand;
Children whose sins are all forgiven,
A holy, happy band.

In flowing robes of spotless white
See every one arrayed,
Dwelling in everlasting light,
And joys that never fade.

6

Once they were little ones like you,
And lived on earth below,

And could not praise as now they do
The Lord who loved them so.

What brought them to that world above,
That heaven so bright and fair,
Where all is peace, and joy, and love?—
How came those children there?

Because the Saviour shed his blood
To wash away their sin;

Bathed in that pure and precious flood,
Behold them white and clean.

On earth they sought their Saviour's grace,
On earth they loved his name;

So now they see his blessed face,
And stand before the Lamb.

THE HIDING-PLACE.

AWAKE, Sweet harp of Judah, wake,
Retune thy strings for Jesus' sake;
We sing the Saviour of our race,
The Lamb, our shield and hiding-place.

When God's right arm is bared for war,
And thunders clothe his cloudy car,
