A Prayer for Spiritual Illumination.

SHOOT forth, O blessed Jesu, the bright beams of thy heavenly and eternal light, that it may enlighten all the dark corners of my heart, and effectually scatter every cloud of ignorance and error, which now hang so thick over me. Call home my wandering thoughts, and repulse the temptations which so furiously assault me, subdue those corrup

tions which range in these deserts, and ever strive to devour me, that by thy power the wilderness may be turned into a palace, and instead of those raging passions, no sounds may be heard there but songs of praise. Thou Lord, who commanded the winds and the waves, and they obeyed thee, silence. these storms within my breast; say to these troubled seas be still, and there shall be peace; send out thy light and thy truth, and warm this barren soil; for such am 1, till softened and impregnated by the sun of righteousness. Pour down thy grace upon me plentifully, and water me with thy refreshing moisture, which, like seasonable showers, and gentle dew, may enrich my soul, and enable it to bring forth fruit in abun dance. Raise and refine my mind, pressed down with the dross of earthly desires, and draw my affections up to heaven and heavenly objects, that the sweet relish of that bliss above, may wean me from all the pleasures here below draw me with a holy violence from all the perishing comforts of this mortal state. Unite me to thyself with inviolable bands of holy love, so shall my soul be satisfied for thou alone canst answer all my desires, and the whole world without thee is emptiness and nothing. Now to thee, Oblessed Jesu, do I fly for refuge; Lord, I beseech thee, shelter one of thy unworthy servants under the shadow of thy wings for ever, and place me among those holy seraphs, who are uniting Hallelujahs to God the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Amen.

STANHOPE.

A Collect, or Prayer, for all conditions of

men.

O GOD, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men, that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations; and for all christian congregations, that being so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves, christians, may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in the unity of the spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally we commend to thy fatherly goodness, all sickness in those who are any ways afflicted or the Family distressed in mind, body, or estate; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities; giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for Jesus Christ his sake. Amen.

Confessional Address, adapted for family, or public Calamities.

Master. O THOU Father of mercies, who gave us being at first, and who hast nourished and brought us up as children when we reflect upon thy goodness, whereby thou hast laid us under the strongest obligations of love and gratitude, submission and obedience; we desire with the deepest humiliation, contri

tion and penitential sorrow, to reflect on the unsuitable returns we have made. Behold! O Lord, we are vile; we have been ungrate ful to thee, our Creator and Preserver, and have transgressed thy holy laws, and violated our obligations in numerous instances of ingratitude; we have erred; and strayed from. thy ways, and have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts; wer have done those things we ought not to have done, and left undone those things we ought. to have done, and there is no help in us, and we are before thee in our trespasses and sins. We do earnestly repent and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, whereby we have exposed ourselves to thy righteous displeasure, and rendered ourselves obnoxious to thy resentments! But thou, Q+ God, have mercy on us miserable offenders; restore to us, who are penitent, thy grace,, according to thy promise declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord; and may af-flictive dispensations have their due effect;. may thy rod of correction serve to reform us, that in future we may endeavour to walk before thee in newness of life, and new obedi
