charitable affiftance towards rebuilding our ruin, ous Church at Bombay; the neglect whereof, you may not be infenfible, hath given too great occafion of reproach to us, our religion and country, even to a proverb; but this proverb we hope to fpoil by the bleffing of GOD, and your affiftance; having already made a beginning to the work, and being encouraged thereunto by feveral unexpected and generous contributions. There needs not we hope any other argument or motive of perfuafion to fo good a work, than that it conduceth to propagate the wholefome doctrine. of Chriftianity, and that it is a means to advance our own, as well as the common falvation.

In affurance therefore of the goodness of our caufe, and your favourable approbation of this fo glorious an undertaking, we have herewithal fent you a lift of the fubfcriptions, and the fermon that was preached occafionally on that fubject; not only as an encouragement, but to Thew you the fincerity of our charitable intentions, and the due application of whatever is thus unanimously and charitably intended.

We are, Gentlemen,

Your very humble fervants,

Richard Cobbe,

Stephen Strutt,

Ephraim Bendall.

To all Chiefs, &c. Gentlemen in the fervice of the bonourable Company at Carwar, &c. and to all other charitable and well-difpofed persons of the Christian faith, greeting.

1

generofity, that we are come thus far requesting your favourable concurrence with us in rebuilding our ruinous Church at Bombay; which good work, though it hath lain too long neglected, yet is now again fet on foot once more, and will, we hope, with the bleffing of GOD and your charitable affistance, be speedily compleated, to the fatisfaction of all our generous benefactors. The ill fuccess of what hath formerly been contributed, hath indeed very justly occafioned fome sort of distrust; but the peaceful fucceffion of affairs in these our days, (which GOD continue) together with the vigorous profecution of the work, and the due application of what is thus charitably intended, will we prefume be fufficient to prevent all doubts and ill furmises for the future.

In confidence therefore of our own fincerity, and your favourable approbation of fo beneficial a work, we have herewithal fent you the fermon that was preached on that occafion, and a lift of the fubfcriptions for the use of our Church, with which we hope you will not think much though at this distance to communicate, who are,
