By order of the Honourable Charles Boone, Efq; Prefident and Governor of Bombay, &c.

PSAL. XXIV.

Said at the opening of the Church of Bombay, On CHRISTMAS-DAY 1718,

By the Chaplain to the Factory, meeting the Governor, &c. Council coming into Church. Domini eft terra.

Pfal. 24.

THE earth is the Lord's, and all that there in is the compafs of the world, and they that dwell therein.

2 For he hath founded it upon the feas: and prepared it upon the floods.

3 Who fhall afcend into the hill of the Lord: or who shall rise up in his holy place?

4 Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart: and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor fworn to deceive his neighbour.

5 He fhall receive the bleffing from the Lord: and righteoufnefs from the God of his falvation. 6 This is the generation of them that seek him : even of them that feek thy face, O Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlafting doors: and the King of glory fhall come in.

8. Who is the King of glory: it is the Lord ftrong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle.

9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory fhall come in.

IO Who is the King of glory: even the Lord of hofts, he is the King of glory.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghoft.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever fhall be world without end. Amen.

Let us pray.

PRevent us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy moft gracious favour, and further us with thy continual help, that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy name, and finally by thy mercy obtain everlasting Life, through Jefus Christ our Lord,

Amen.

In whose name, and for whose fake ye ought humbly to implore the bleffing of GOD upon the whole race of mankind; that he would be pleafed to have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, Hereticks, and Schifmaticks; that he would take from them all blindness and hardness of heart that fo his ways may be known upon earth, his faving health unto all nations.

More especially are ye required to pray for Chrift's holy catholick Church, i. e. the congregation of christian people wherefoever difperfed or howfoever diftreffed over the face of the whole earth; particularly for that found and primitive part of it the Church of England; and therein for his moft excellent Majefty, our dread Sovereign,

reign, GEORGE by the grace of GoD of Great Britain, France and Ireland King, defender of the Faith, in all caufes, and over all perfons, as well ecclefiaftical as civil, fupreme.

Pray ye likewife for his Royal Highness George Prince of Wales, the Princess, and their Iffue, and all the Royal Family.

In like manner alfo are ye to pray for those, who are rightly ordained to ferve at GoD's Altar, the Clergy of our Land, by what names or titles foever dignified or diftinguished, whether Archbishops, Bishops, Priests or Deacons; efpecially for the moft Reverend Father in GoD, William by divine Providence Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, and for the right Reverend Father in GOD, John by divine Permiffion Lord Bishop of London, our Metropolitan and Diocesan.

Pray ye likewife for the King's most Honourable Privy Council, for all the Nobility and Magiftracy of his realms; particularly for the Honourable United Company of Merchants of England trading to the East Indies.

Pray ye alfo for the Commons of our land: And that there be never wanting a conftant fupply of fit perfons to do GoD fervice in Church and State, let us befeech him to profper the two famous Universities of England, Oxford and Cambridge; to grant that in thefe, and in all other places more immediately fet apart to his honour and glory, religion and learning, virtue and good manners, and whatfoever elfe is commendable and praife-worthy, may for ever flourish and abound.

Lastly, let us come to him for a bleffing upon ourfelves; to blefs all orders and degrees of men amongst us, from the higheft to the loweft; in a more efpecial manner to be propitious to

the

the Honourable the Prefident, to the reft of the Council, and to all other members belonging to this royal and ample foundation; that fo we may all faithfully discharge our refpective duties in our several vocations, living in the true faith and fear of GOD, in a loyal and humble obedience to our King, and in brotherly love and charity one towards another.

And in praying, we of this place ought more especially to pray for those that are at fea; that GOD would fecure to us our trade and shipping; (and that they may pass thefe parts with greater fecurity upon their lawful occafions, that he would vouchsafe to profper the arms of his fervants, and the fleet in which they fail with fuccefs and victory ;) that he would protect and fave them in all dangers, and fo guide them with his almighty prefence, that they may return in fafety to their defired port, to declare the wonders which God hath done, and to rejoice in him in whom they trust.

But left our unthankfulness for mercies already received should make us unworthy of his future favours, let us be mindful to offer up our praises and thanksgivings, for all his mercies conferred upon us; to bless him for our creation, preservation, health, friends, food and raiment, for the comforts as well as the neceffaries of this life, particularly for the light of the glorious gospel, and for the free excercife of his true religion in these remote parts of the Chriftian world.

But above all ought we to laud and magnify his great and glorious Name, for that amazing inftance of love towards us, in fending his Son, (as at this time, into the world) to die for us, and to rise again for our justification.

G

Finally,

Finally, Let us praife God for the glorious examples of the Apostles, Prophets, Saints, Martyrs and Confeffors, and for all other holy perfons departed this life in the true faith and fear of Chrift. Men and Women famous in their generation, (fuch as) befeeching him to give us grace fo to follow their good and pious examples, that we together with them may be made partakers of his heavenly kingdom; remembring always to conclude with the Lord's Prayer, after this most perfect form and manner, faying;

OUR

UR Father, which art in heaven; hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trefpaffes, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
