Now
Ow Sarai, Abram's wife, bare him
no children: and she had a hand-
maid, an Egyptian, whose name was
Hagar.

2 And Sarai said unto Abram, Be hold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram bearkened to the voice of Sarai

3 And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4 And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and, when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

s And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

6 But Abrain said unto Sarai, Bebold, thy maid is in thy hand: do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she filed from her face.

7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will inultiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

19 And be wil be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's band against him: and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

2 And I will make my covenant be tween me and thee; and will multiply thee exceedingly.

3 And Abram fell on his face and God talked with him, saying,

4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram; but thy name shall be called Abraham: for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and 1 will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed af ter thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

8 And 1 will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee, in their generations.

10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you, and thy seed after thee; Every man-child among you shall be circuncised.

11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man-child in your generations; he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

13 He that is both in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money must needs be circumcised and my covenant shall be in your tiesh for an everlasting covenant.

14 And the uncircumcised manchild, whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off froin his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her naine Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

16 And 1 will bless her, and give thee a son also of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of

AND the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent-door in the heat of the day:

2 And he lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, lo, three inen stood by him and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent-door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3 And said, My Lord, now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant: 4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:

5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that you shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do as thou hast said.

6 And Abrahami hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, Knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

17 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

19 Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in bim?

19 For I know him, that be will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very griev ous ;

21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I wil know.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.

23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the right eous with the wicked?

24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein,

25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked; and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee, Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

26 And the LORD said, If I find 'in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.

CHAP. XIX.

17 And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, which am but dust and ashes:

18 Peradventure there shall lack five. of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.

29 And be spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake.

30 And he said unto him, O let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there.

31 And he said; Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the JORD: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake. 32 And he said, O let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.

33 And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham and Abraham returned unto bis place.

CHAP. XIX.

AND there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot, seeing them, rose up to meet them; and he howed himself with his face toward the ground;

2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all right.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son-inlaw, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons-in-law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get ye out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons-in-law.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city

16 And while he fingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the handt of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, 3 And he pressed upon them great-lest thou be consumed. Jy; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house: and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodem, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, 7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes only unto these inen do nothing for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou bast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die.

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning, this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for 1 cannot do any thing till thou be come thither therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zour.

grew upon the ground.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

28 And be looked toward Sodom and Gomorrab, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, ne and his two daughters.

31 And the first-born said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

32 Come, and let us make our father dunk wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

37 And the first-born bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and calied his name Ben-amini: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

CHAP. XX.

Athence towards the south country,
Abrahain journeyed from
and dwelled between Kadesh and
Shur, and sojourned in Gerar.

2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister and Abimelech, king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him. Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she

is a man's wife.

But Abimelech had not come near

5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself, sai He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart, and innocency of my hands, have I done this.

6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.

7 Now, therefore, restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.

8 Therefore Abimelech rose early in the niorging, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears and the men were sore afraid.

9 Then Abimelech called Abrahamn, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing

11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

12 And yet indeed she is my sister, she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.

13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my fa ther's house, that I said unto her, This is thy kindness which thou shalt shew unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me, He is my brother.

14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and men-servants, and wo men-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

15 And Abimelech said, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

16 And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.

17 So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants; and they bare children.

18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

CHAP. XXI.

AND the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken:

Isaec born. Abimelech's

covenant with Abraham. 21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

CHAP. XXII. 2 For Sarah conceived, and bare! Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

3 And Abraham called the name of bis son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.

4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac, being eight days old, as God had. commanded him.

5 And Abraham was an hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him.

6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.

7 And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck for I have borne him a son in his old age.

8 And the child grew, and was weaned and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.

22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech, and l'hichol the chief captain of his host, spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in ail that thou doest:

23 Now, therefore, swear unto me here by God, that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned

24 And Abraham said, I will swear. 25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.

25 And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it but to-day.

27 And Abraham took sheep and ox borneen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant.

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had unto Abraham, mocking:

10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bond-woman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

28 And Abraham set seven ewelambs of the flock by themselves.

29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe. lambs, which thou hast set by them selves?

11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight, because of his son. 30 And he said, For these seren ewe12 And God said unto Abraham, Let lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that it not be grievous in thy sight, because they may be a witness unto me that I of the lad, and because of thy bond-have digged this well. woman in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.

13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will make a nation, because he is thy seed.

14¶And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, (putting it on her shoulder,) and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-sheba.

15 And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under. one of the shrubs.

31 Wherefore he called that place Beer-sheba; because there they sware both of them.

32 Thus they made a covenant at Beer-sheba: Then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.

33 And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.

34 And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines' land many days.

CHAP. XXII.

16 And she went and sat her down AND it came to pass, after these over against him, a good way off, as it things, that God did tempt Abrawere a bow-shot: for she said, Let me ham, and said unto him, Abraham: not see the death of the child. And and he said, Behold, here I am. she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.

17 And God heard the voice of the lad: and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath beard the voice of the lad where he is.

18 Arise, lift ap the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.

19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

20 And God was with the lad; and be grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer..

2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and ciave the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.

5. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide you here with the ass;
