Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see;
Hail! incarnate Deity!

Pleased, as man, with men to dwell,
JESUS, great Immanuel!

Risen with healing in His wings,
Light and life to all He brings.
Hail! the Sun of Righteousness!

Hail! the heaven-born Prince of Peace!

[blocks in formation]

WHILE shepherds watch'd their flocks by night,

All seated on the ground,

The Angel of the Lord came down,

And glory shone around.

"Fear not," said he,-for mighty dread

Had seized their troubled mind,

"Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind.

"To

you, in David's town this day, Is born, of David's line,

A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord,
And this shall be the sign :

"The heavenly Babe you there shall find To human view display'd,

All meanly wrapt in swathing bands, laid."

And in a manger

Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith
Appear'd a shining throng

Of Angels praising God, who thus
Address'd their joyful song→→

"All glory be to God on high,
And to the earth be peace:
Good-will, henceforth, from heaven to men,
Begin and never cease."

15.

BRIGHT and joyful is the morn,
For to us a Child is born;

1. From the highest realms of heaven
Unto us a Son is given.

On His shoulder He shall bear
Power and majesty, and wear
On His vesture and His thigh
Names most awful, names most high.

Wonderful in counsel He,
The incarnate Deity;

Sire of ages ne'er to cease,

King of kings and Prince of peace.

Come and worship at His feet,
Yield to Christ the homage meet,
From His manger to His throne,
Homage due to God alone.

16.

ANGELS, from the realms of glory
Wing your flight o'er all the earth!
Ye who sang creation's story

Now proclaim Messiah's birth!
Come, and worship;

Worship Christ, the new-born King!

Shepherds, in the field abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night!
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the Infant-light.
Come, and worship;
Worship Christ, the new-born King!

Saints, before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear!
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In His temple shall appear:
Come, and worship;

Worship Christ, the new-born King!

Sinners, wrung with true repentance,
Doom'd for guilt to endless pains,
Justice now revokes the sentence,
Mercy calls you-break your chains!
Come, and worship;

Worship Christ, the new-born King!

17.

Now let our mingling voices rise
In grateful rapture to the skies,
And hail a Saviour's birth;
Let songs of joy the day proclaim,
When JESUS from His glory came
To bless the sons of earth.

He came to bid the weary rest,
To heal the sinner's wounded breast,
To bind the broken heart;

To spread the light of truth around,
And to the world's remotest bound
The heavenly gift impart.

8.8.6.

He came our trembling souls to save
From sin, from sorrow, and the grave,
And chase our fears away;
Victorious over death and time,
To lead us to a happier clime,
Where reigns eternal day.

18.

THE race that long in darkness walk'd
Have seen a glorious light;

The people dwell in day, who dwelt
In death's surrounding night.

To hail Thy rise, Thou better Sun,
The gathering nations come,
Joyous, as when the reapers bear
The harvest treasures home.

For unto us a Child is born;
To us a Son is given;

Him shall the tribes of earth obey,
Him all the hosts of heaven.

His Name shall be The Prince of Peace
For evermore adored,

The Wonderful, the Counsellor,

The Great and Mighty Lord.

19.

HIGH let us swell our tuneful notes,
And join the angelic throng,

For Angels no such love have known
To wake a cheerful song.

Good-will to sinful men is shown,
And peace on earth is given;
For, lo! the incarnate Saviour comes
With messages from heaven.

Justice and grace, with sweet accord,
His rising beams adorn;

Let heaven and earth in concert join,
To us a Child is born.

Glory to God in highest strains,

In highest worlds be paid;

His glory by our lips proclaim'd,

And by our lives display'd.

When shall we reach those blissful realms

Where Christ exalted reigns;

And learn of the celestial choir
Their own immortal strains?

CHRISTIANS, awake! salute the happy morn,
Whereon the Saviour of mankind was born;
Rise to adore the mystery of love,

Which hosts of Angels chanted from above:
With them the joyful tidings first begun,
Of God Incarnate, and the Virgin's Son.

Then to the watchful shepherds it was told,
Who heard the angelic herald's voice, “Behold,
I bring good tidings of a Saviour's birth,
To you, and all the nations upon earth;
This day hath God fulfill'd His promised word,
This day is born a Saviour, Christ the Lord."
