Till a dart strike through his liver, as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

CHAP. X.

The Proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son

maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

The Lord will not suffer the soul of the

righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

He that gathereth in summer, is a wise son: but he that sleepeth'in harvest, is a son that causeth shame.

Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

CHAP. XI.

A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight.

When pride cometh, then cometh shame; but with the lowly is wisdom.

The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.

CHAP. XII.

Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

CHAP. XV.

A soft answer turneth away wrath but grie vous words stir up anger.

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright; but the mouth of fools poureth out fool ishness.

H

The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.

Hell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?

Better is a little with the fear of the LORD, than great treasure and trouble therewith.

Better is á dinner of herbs where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred therewith.

CHAP. XVH.

Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than a house full of sacrifices, with strife. Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and be that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

An evil man seeketh only rebellion: there

fore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him. The beginning of strife is as" when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention before it be meddled with.

CHAP. XIX.

BETTER is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

A false witness shall not be unpunished: and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD: and that which he hath given will he pay him again.

Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
