riches in glory by Christ Jesus,-to guide you by his unerring counsel through the world,-to lead you by his Spirit into all the truth,—to support you, by his powerful grace, under every trial; and, when the sorrows of life are over, to receive you to his eternal kingdom, where is fulness of joy and pleasures for evermore."

"I was rather surprised to hear the account of Miss A--. The last time I saw her, my apprehensions concerning her long continuance in this state of trial were great; but I did not suppose she was so bad as you represent. Oh, my friend! it is a great satisfaction, in a dying hour, to know in whom we have believed; to have strong consolation in the hope set before us in the Gospel; to have the sting of death extracted by the Saviour's blood; and to triumph even in prospect of the dark valley of the shadow of death!"

The following are extracts from letters written just before his marriage:

⚫ Philip. iv. 19.

"May the God of all grace make his consolations abound to your soul, and cause you to rejoice in hope of the glory of God! Oh that we were daily more and more convinced of the vanity and uncertainty of life! Then should we live more by faith, and have our affections set on things above! I trust our union together will not abate our love to Jesus, our best friend; but, by being helpers of each other's faith and joy, stimulate us to every good word and work, for so an entrance shall be ministered unto us abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; and so shall we ever be with the Lord. In prospect of that felicity may we live! in a well-founded hope of it may we die! and, in the full enjoyment of it, may we ascribe all to the free grace of God our Saviour!"

"I have observed, with some degree of pain, and it is too often the case, that when young people are married, they do not appear to have that love for the people and ways of God that

they formerly manifested; their hearts grow cold, and religious conversation occupies scarcely any of their time. I hope we shall endeavour to avoid falling into such sins, and strive to deserve the eulogium passed upon an exemplary pair, recorded in the Scriptures: And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless."7

" "Tis true, you have nothing but what you have received from above; and a sense of that, I hope, will keep you humble: there is nothing like humility. We must be found low at the foot of the cross, before we can sufficiently prize a precious Christ. I trust we shall prove helpmeets: indeed, when we consider our hearts, surely we are convinced that we need nothing to retard our progress in the divine life; forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth to those things which are before, let us press toward the mark, for the prize of our high calling of God in Christ Jesus; and may our path be

as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day."

The following letter was addressed to Miss M, at Sheerness, at the time of her father's death:

"My dear Friend,

"Chatham, Oct. 17, 1811.

"Influenced, I hope, by that gospel, which enjoins the happy partakers of it, to weep with them that weep,' I have taken the liberty of sending you a few lines; and trust, when you consider the motives that dictate them, you will excuse the freedom. I assure you, I am extremely concerned for the death of your excellent father, and sincerely sympathize with you in your present calamity; but to be afflicted, more or less, is the common lot of God's people, who are frequently exercised with frowning providences. But, my dear friend, you must not give way to excessive grief; your sorrows must not be immoderate, or inconsistent with the will of God, and

resignation to his gracious disposal of all human events. Do you not often recollect, in this season of distress, the serious conversation, the fervent prayers, the amiable and happy spirit of your dear parent, who was on Tuesday last conveyed to Abraham's bosom? Blessed be God for making him so lovely an example, and so zealous a promoter of pure and undefiled religion! Blessed be God for promising us the same divine Spirit, and giving us the same glorious hopes, which have had such a quickening and ennobling influence on his heart! Let me then entreat you, and your dear brothers and sisters, to sit down, with dissolution and eternity in view, and encourage one another from the word, the precious word of God! He has said, Fear thou not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right-hand of my righteousness. This promise is sufficient under every trial, and authorizes you to say to the grim monster, who has again visited your family, and taken your dearest earthly friend, Yea, though I walk through the valley of
