ST JEAN-BAPTISTE.

Beaucoup de peintres ont représenté saint Jean-Baptiste dans le désert, parce que ce sujet offre le moyen de faire une belle étude de jeune homme, et que la composition n'obligeant pas à mettre plusieurs figures, elle peut être d'une proportion assez grande dans un cadre d'une petite dimension.

Annibal Carrache, en composant ce tableau, a dû éviter de retomber dans des poses semblables à celles qu'avaient faites Raphaël, Guido Reni, et Jean-Baptiste Mola, qui ont été données précédemment sous les n° 91, 98 et 124: aussi a-t-il placé sa figure dans une action différente.

Dans les tableaux dont nous avons parlé, saint Jean paraît prêcher à la multitude venue dans le désert pour l'entendre. Ici le prophète est seul, se reposant près d'une fontaine où il prend de l'eau pour se désaltérer.

Ce tableau a fait partie de l'ancienne galerie d'Orléans. Il a passé dans le cabinet d'Angerstein, et se trouve maintenant au British-Museum. Il a été gravé par Le Cerf.

SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST.

Many painters have represented St. John the Baptist in the desert, because this subject presents the opportunity of making a fine study of a young man, and the composition not obliging the introduction of several figures, it may be upon a rather large scale, within a small space.

Annibale Caracci, when composing this picture, had to avoid repeating an attitude similar to those done by Raphael, Guido Reni, and Giovanni Battista Mola, which have been already given, nos 91, 98, and 124 : he has therefore presented his figure in a different action.

In the pictures we have spoken of, St. John appears preaching to the multitude, who are come into the desert to hear him. Here, the prophet is alone, resting near a fountain, whence he is taking some water to drink.

This picture formed part of the ancient Orleans Gallery. It afterwards belonged to the Angerstein Collection, and it is now in the British National Gallery. It has been engraved by Le Cerf.
