servation is founded on a remark, inserted
by the late learned Archbishop Secker in the
margin of his Hebrew Bible.

There are many versions of this passage, none of which are very satisfactory. The following three are quoted by Dr. Geddes :

1. That of the Septuagint.-If thou have rightly offered, yet have not rightly distinguished, hast thou not sinned? Be quiet, &c., &c.

2. That of the Vulgate, followed by the greater part of modern interpreters.-If thou do well, shalt thou not be accepted? but if thou do not well, shall not sin lie at

3 ἔζησε δὲ Ἀδὰμ τριάκοντα καὶ διακόσια ἔτη. καὶ ἀπέθανε. 28 καὶ ἔζησε Λάμεχ ὀκτὼ ἔτη. καὶ ἐγέννησε κατὰ τὴν ἰδέαν αὐτοῦ, καὶ κατὰ τὴν εἰκόνα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπωνόμασε τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, Σήθ. 4 ἐγένοντο δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι ̓Αδάμ, ἃς ἔζησε μετὰ τὸ γεννῆσαι αὐτὸν τὸν Σὴθ, ἔτη ἑπτακόσια. καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας. 5 καὶ ἐγένοντο πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι ̓Αδάμ, ἃς ἔζησε, τριάκοντα καὶ ἐννακόσια ἔτη. καὶ ἀπέθανεν. 6 ἔζησε δὲ Σὴθ πέντε καὶ διακόσια ἔτη. καὶ ἐγέννησε τὸν Ἐνώς. 7 καὶ ἔζησε Σὴθ μετὰ τὸ γεννῆσαι αὐτὸν τὸν Ἐνὼς, ἑπτὰ ἔτη καὶ ἑπτακόσια. καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας. 8 καὶ ἐγένοντο πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι Σὴθ, δώδεκα καὶ ἐννακόσια ἔτη. καὶ ἀπέθανε. 9 καὶ ἔζησεν Ἐνὼς ἔτη ἑκατὸν ἐννενήκοντα. καὶ ἐγέννησε τὸν Καϊνᾶν. 10 καὶ ἔζησεν Ενὼς μετὰ τὸ γεννῆσαι αὐτὸν τὸν Καϊνᾶν, πεντεκαίδεκα ἔτη καὶ ἑπτακόσια. καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας. 11 καὶ ἐγένοντο πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι Ενὼς πέντε ἔτη καὶ ἑννακόσια. καὶ ἀπέθανε. 12 καὶ ἔζησε Καϊνᾶν ἑβδομήκοντα καὶ ἑκατὸν ἔτη. καὶ ἐγέννησε τὸν Μαλελεήλ. 13 καὶ ἔζησε Καϊνᾶν μετὰ τὸ γεννῆσαι αὐτὸν τὸν Μαλελεήλ, τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ἑπτακόσια ἔτη. καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας. 14 καὶ ἐγένοντο πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι Καϊνᾶν δέκα ἔτη καὶ ἐννακόσια. καὶ ἀπέθανε. 15 καὶ ἔζησε Μαλελεὴλ πέντε καὶ ἑξήκοντα καὶ ἑκατὸν ἔτη. καὶ ἐγέννησε τὸν Ιάρεδ. 16 καὶ ἔξησε Μαλελεήλ μετὰ τὸ γεννῆσαι αὐτὸν τὸν Ἰάρεδ, ἔτη τριάκοντα καὶ ἑπτακόσια. καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς καὶ θυγατέρας. 17 καὶ ἐγένοντο πᾶσαι αἱ ἡμέραι Μαλελεήλ, ἔτη πέντε καὶ ἐνενήκοντα καὶ ὀκτακόσια. καὶ ἀπέθανε. 18 καὶ ἔζησεν Ιάρεδ δύο καὶ ἑξήκοντα ἔτη καὶ ἑκατὸν. καὶ ἐγέννησε τὸν Ενώχ.

4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters :

5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

6 And Seth lived an hundred and [3769] five years, and begat Enos:

7 And Seth lived after he begat Enos eight hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters:

8 And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years: and he died. 9 9 And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Cainan [Heb. Kenan] :

10 And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters :
