Where all divine perfections meet
To reconcile rebellious man.

g 2 There wisdom shines in fullest blaze,
And justice all her right maintains-
p Astonished angels stoop to gaze,
While mercy o'er the guilty reigns.
3 Yes, merey reigns, and justice too,
In Christ they both harmonious meet;
He paid to justice all her due,
And now he fills the mercy-seat.

4 Such are the wonders of our God;
And such th' amazing depths of grace,
To save from wrath's vindictive rod
The chosen sons of Adam's race.

8 5 With grateful songs, then let our souls
Surround our gracious Father's throne;
And all between the distant poles
His truth and mercy ever own.

HYMN 241. L. M.

Atlantic. [*]

Star of Bethlehem.

e 1 WHEN marshalled on the nightly plain,

The glittering host bestud the sky;

One star alone of all the train,

Can fix the sinner's wandering eye.
o 2 Hark! hark! to God the chorus breaks,
From every host, from every gem;
But one alone the Saviour speaks,
It is the Star of Bethlehem.

g 3 Once on the raging seas I rode,

The storm was loud, the night was dark, The ocean yawn'd-and rudely blow'd The wind that toss'd my foundering bark. a 4 Deep horror then my vitals froze; Death-struck, I ceased the tide to stem; s When suddenly a star arose,

It was the Star of Bethlehem.

b 5 It was my guide, my light, my all,
It bade my dark foreboding cease;
And through the storm and danger's thrall,
It led me to the port of peace.

86 Now safely moor'd-my perils o'er,

I'll sing, first in night's diadem,

For ever and for evermore,

The Star!-the Star of Bethlehem! H. K. WHITE.

Song of the Angels at Bethlehem.

ARK, what mean those holy voices,
Sweetly sounding through the skies?

Lo! the angelic host rejoices;

Heavenly hallelujahs rise.

2 Listen to the wondrous story, Which they chant in hymns of joy;

90 Glory in the highest, glory!

Glory he to God most high."

e 3" Peace on earth, good will from heaven, Reaching far as man is found;

u

Souls redeem'd, and sins forgiven;-
Loud our golden harps shall sound.
4" Christ is born, the Great Anointed;
Heaven and earth his praises sing!
O receive whom God appointed,
For your Prophet, Priest, and King.
SELECT.

14

■5 Hasten, mortals, to adore Him;
Learn his name, and taste his joy;
Till in heaven ye sing before Him,
Glory be to God most high!"

HYMN 243. C. M. Victory. [*]
Nativity of Christ. Luke ii, 14.
MORTALS, awake, with angels join,

And chant the solemn lay:

Joy, love, and gratitude, combine
To hail th' auspicious day.

82 In heaven the rapt'rous song began,
And sweet seraphic fire

Through all the shining legions ran,
And swept the sounding lyre.

3 The theme, the song, the joy was new
To each angelic tongue:

Swift through the realms of light it flew,
And loud the echo rung.

4 Down, through the portals of the sky,
The pealing anthem ran;
And angels flew, with eager joy,
To bear the news to man.

5 Hark! the cherubic armies shout,
And Glory leads the song:
Peace and salvation swell the note
Of all the heavenly throng.

6 With joy the chorus we repeat-
"Glory to God on high!"

Good will and peace are now complete,

Jesus is born to die.

Good Tidings of great Joy to all People.
NGELS! from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;

01 A

Ye, who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth :

Come and worship

Worship Christ, the new-born King.

-2 Shepherds! in the field abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night;
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant-light:
Come, &c.

S

-3 Sages! leave your contemplations;
Brighter visions beam afar;

Seek the Great Desire of nations;
Ye have seen his natal star :
Come, &c.

p 4 Saints before the altar bending,
Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
In his temple shall appear :
Come, &c.

Doom'd for guilt to endless pains,
Justice now revokes the sentence,
Mercy calls you-break your chains:

Epiphany

81 BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the

Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid:
Star of the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.
p 2 Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining,
Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;
Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,-
g Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all.
b 3 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom, and offerings divine,

Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?
4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation,
Vainly with gold would his favour secure;
Richer by far is the heart's adoration,
Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

8 5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;
Star of the east, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid.

HYMN 246. L. M. Bowen. [*]

The Teaching of Jesus.

P1HOW sweetly flow'd the gospel's sound
From lips of gentleness and grace,

When list'ning thousands gather'd round, g And joy and rev'rence filled the place.

2 From heav'n he came of heav'n he spoke,
To heav'n he led his followers' way;
Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke,
Unveiling an immortal day,

3 "Come, wanderers, to my Father's home,
Come, all ye weary ones, and rest!"
Yes! sacred Teacher-we will come-
Obey thee,-love thee, and be blest!
e 4 Decay, then, tenements of dust!
Pillars of earthly pride, decay!
A nobler mansion waits the just,
s And Jesus has prepar'd the way.

BOWRING.

Angels' Hymn. [*]

Transfiguration. Luke ix, 28-31.

-1 N Tabor's top the Saviour stands,
His alter dace resplendent shines.

And while he elevates his hands,
Lo, glory marks its gentle lines.

2 Two heavenly forms descend to wait
Upon their suffering Prince below;
But while they worship at his feet,
They talk of fast-approaching wo.
3 Amid the lustre of the scene,
To Calvary he turns his eyes:
And with submission, all serene,
He marks the future tempest rise.

4 Then let us climb the mount of pray'r,
Where all his beaming glories shine:
And gazing on his brightness there,
Our woes forget in joys divine.

5 Oh, that on yonder heav'nly hills,
Where now the risen Saviour stands,

e And peace, like softest dew, distilsg I too may elevate my hands.

And shall our cheeks be dry?

Let floods of penitential grief
Burst forth from every eye.
