and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.

20 To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One.

21 Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he call

eth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.

22 The Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.

23 For all the gods of the nations are idols: but the Lord made the heavens.

SECTION III.-God invisible.

LESSON XI.

CANST thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

2 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know? The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

3 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

4 Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: on the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him : he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.

5 Who hath stood in the counsel of the Lord, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word and heard it?

6 Who hath directed the spirit of the Lord, or, being his counsellor, hath taught him?

7 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of

judgement, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

8 God speaketh once, yea, twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

9 No man hath seen God at any time.

10 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction. That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

11 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars how high they are.

12 And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?

13 Thick clouds are a covering to him that he seeth not, and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

14 Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel the saviour!

15 God is greater than man, Why dost thou strive against

him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

16 Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judge ment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.

17 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth; so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

18 Thou canst not see my face; for there shall no man see me and live.

SECTION IV.-God all-present and all-seeing.

LESSON XII.

Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places, that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the Lord.

2 Behold the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

3 I have declared the former things from the beginning, and they went forth out of my mouth; and I shewed them, I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.

4 I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them.

5 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

6 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them

down: for mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from mine eyes. For I know their works and their thoughts.

7 Hell and destruction are before the Lord: how much more then the hearts of the children of men? hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.

8. The Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

9 Times are not hidden from the Almighty. The heaven, and heaven of heavens cannot contain him.

7 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea: even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

8 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me: even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

9 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

10 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in

secret.

11 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

12 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them. If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand; when I wake, I am still with thee.

13 Search me, O God, and

know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts; and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

LESSON XIV.

WHY sayest thou, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgement is passed over from my God?

2 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.

4 The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men. From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

5 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

6 The Lord is in his holy temple, the Lord's throne is in heaven his eyes behold, his eyelids try the children of men; for the Lord searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts.

7 Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the Lord pondereth the hearts,

8 The fining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the Lord trieth the hearts.

9 The heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.

10 The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord.

11 The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord.

12 All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes: but the Lord weigheth the spirits. For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.

13 There is no darkness nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

14 They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage: They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless: Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

15 Understand, ye brutish among the people; and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

16 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?

17 If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain; if thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not: Doth not he that

pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

18 O Lord of hosts that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, thou, O Lord, knowest me, thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart towards thee.

19 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy counte

nance.

20 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? for they say, The Lord seeth us not; The Lord hath forsaken the earth.

21 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay. For shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

22 If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god: shall not God search this out? For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

23 Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

24 I know that he can do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from him: Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

2 The Lord is great in Zion; and he is high above all people. 3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy. 4 Exalt ye the Lord our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

5 O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph. For the Lord most High is terrible: he is a great king over all the earth.

6 God is gone up with a shout, the Lord, with the sound of a trumpet.

7 Sing praises to God, sing praises sing praises unto our king, sing praises. For God is the king of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

9 O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all

the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people.

10 Honour and majesty are before him; strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

11 Give unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people, give un to the Lord glory and strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.

12 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. Say among the heathen, that the Lord reigneth: the world also shall be established, that it shall not be moved; he shall judge the people righteously.

13 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad: let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof. Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord: for he
