LoRD, thou hast been favourable unto thy land: thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. 2. When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. 3 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing : then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. 4 The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad. 5 Turn again our captivity, O Lord, as the streams in the south. * 6 I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. 7 Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem. 8 Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together: 9 Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the Lord. 10 For there are set thrones of judgement, the thrones of the house of David. 11 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. 12 Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces. 13 For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee. 14 Because of the house of the Lord our God I will seek thy good.
LESSON CLIX. Destruction of Jerusalem.
BLow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; 2 A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. 3. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. * 4 The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. 5 Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap; like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. 6 Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. 7 They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: 8 Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. 9 They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. 10 The earth shall quake before them ; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: 11 And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
SoN of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness; 2 And say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord God of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with carefulness, and drink their water with astonishment, that her land may be desolate from all that is therein, because of the violence of all them that dwell therein. 3 And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be desolate; and ye shall know that I am the Lord. 4 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause
them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. 5 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 6 And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters; and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them. 7 The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us. 8 I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them. 9 And they shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall scatter them among the nations, and disperse them in the countries. * 10 But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence; that they may declare all their abominations among the heathen whither they come; and they shall know that I am the Lord.
11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant. 12 But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness. 13 They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. 14 And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls. 15 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest. 16 There shall the great owl make her nest, and lay, and hatch, and gather under her shadow : there shall the vultures also be gathered, every one with her mate.
THUS saith the Lord God; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her. 2 And she hath changed my judgements into wickedness more than the nations, and my statutes more than the countries that are round about her:
for they have refused my judgements and my statutes, they have not walked in them. 3 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye have not walked in my statutes, neither have kept my judgements, neither have done according to the judgements of the nations that are round about you; 4 Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, am against thee, and will execute judgements in the midst of thee in the sight of the nations. 5 And I will do in thee that which I have not done, and whereunto I will not do any more the like, because of all thine abominations. 6 Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgements in thee, and the whole remnant of thee will I scatter into all the winds. 7 Wherefore, As I live, saith the Lord God, surely, because thou hast defiled my sanctuary with all thy detestable things, and with all thine abominations, therefore will I also diminish thee; neither shall mine eye spare, neither will I have any
* 8. A third part of thee shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of thee: and a third partshall fall by the sword round about thee; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.
9 Moreover I will make thee waste, and a reproach among the nations that are round about thee, in the sight of all that ass by. 10 So it shall be a reproach and a taunt, an instruction and an astonishment unto the nations that are round about thee, when I shallexecute judgements in thee. I the Lord have spoken it. | 11 What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the house-tops? 12 Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle. 13 All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far. 14 Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people. 15 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people ! 16 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging-place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them 17 For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
AND the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, "[2 Son of man, set thy face toward the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them, 3 And say, Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God; Thus saith the Lord God to the mountains, and to the hills, to the rivers, and to the valleys; Behold, I, even I, will bring a sword upon you, and I will destroy your high places. 4 And your altars shall be desolate, and your images shall be broken: and I will cast down your slain men before your idols. 5 And I will lay the dead carcases of the children of Israel before their idols; and I will scatter your bones round about your altars. 6 In all your dwelling-places the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your images may be cut down, and your works may be abolished. 7 And the slain shall fall in the midst of you, and ye shall know that I am the Lord. * 8. Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries. 9 And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives: and they shall loathe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations. 10 And they shall know that I am the Lord, and that I have not said in vain that I would do this evil unto them. * 11 -Thus saith the Lord God; Smite with thine hand, and stamp with thy foot, and say, Alas for all the evil abominations of the house of Israel! for they shall fall by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. 12 Then shall ye know that I am the Lord, when their slain men shall be among their idols round about their altars, upon every high hill, in all the tops of the mountains, and under every green tree, and under everythick oak, the place where they did offer sweet savour to all their idols. 13 So will I stretch out my hand upon them, and make the land desolate, yea, more desolate than the wilderness toward Diblath, in all their habitations: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
MoREover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, *|| 2 Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land. 3 Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger
upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations. 4 Thus saith the Lord God; An evil, an only evil, behold, is conne. 5 An end is come, the end is come : it watcheth for thee; behold, it is come. 6 The morning is come unto thee, O thou that dwellest in the land: the time is come, the day of trouble is near. 7 And mine eye shall not spare, neither will I have pity: I will recompense thee according to thy ways and thine abominations that are in the midst of thee; and ye shall know that I am the Lord that smiteth. 8 Behold the day, behold, it is come : the morning is gone forth ; the rod hath blossomed, pride hath budded. 9 Violence is risen up into a rod of wickedness: none of them shall remain, nor of their multitude, nor of any of theirs: neither shall there be wailing for them. 10 The time is come, the day draweth near: let not the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn: for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof. 11 For the seller shall not return to that which is sold, although they were yet alive: for the vision is touching the whole multitude thereof, which shall not return; neither shall any strengthen himself in the iniquity of his life. 12 They have blown the trumpet, even to make all ready;
