17 Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever.

18 Thy name, O Lord, endureth for ever; and thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.

19 I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

20 For I have said, Mercy shall be built up for ever: thy faithfulness shalt thou establish in the very heavens.

21 Blessed be thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.

¶22 The Lord thy God he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him, and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.

23 The Lord is King for ever and ever.

24 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

25 The works of his hands are verity and judgement: all his commandments are sure.

26 They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

27 He is the living God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end. He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth.

28 His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

29 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

30 There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

31 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

32 I know that whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

33 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

34 The Strength of Israel will not lie, nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth. For he performeth the thing that is appointed.

35 Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?

36 For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall

disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

37 The Lord shall reign for ever, even thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.

38 His work is honourable and glorious; and his righteousness endureth for ever.

LESSON XXII.

THE Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: for I am the Lord; I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass.

2 I the Lord have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it: I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent. According to thy ways, and according to thy doings will I judge thee, saith the Lord God.

3 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

4 Know therefore that the Lord thy God he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him, and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.

5 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

to whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did 'not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.

7 Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

8 But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned, and said, Like as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

9 Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength: hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgement to rest for a light of the people.

10 My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arm shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.

11 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.

12 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people

6 Be ye not as your fathers, in whose heart is my law; fear

ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

13 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm

shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.

SECTION VII.-Goodness of God.

LESSON XXIII.

O GIVE thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy; and gathered them out of the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

3 They wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way, they found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted in them.

4 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

5 And he led them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

¶6 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

7 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.

8 Such as sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death, being bound in affliction and

[blocks in formation]

9 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour; they fell down, and there was none to help.

10 Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses.

11 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder.

12 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

13 For he hath broken the gates of brass, and cut the bars of iron in sunder.

14 Fools because of their transgression and because of their iniquities are afflicted :

15 Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death.

16 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.

17 He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.

¶18 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! 19 Let them sacrifice the sa

crifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing. 20 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; these see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

21 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

22 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

23 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.

24 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

25 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

26 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

27 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

28 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

29 He turneth rivers into a wilderness, and the watersprings into dry ground, fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

30 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into water-springs.

31 And there he maketh the

hungry to dwell, that they may prepare a city for habitation: and sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which may yield fruits of increase.

32 He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and suffereth not their cattle to decrease.

33 Again they are minished and brought low through op pression, affliction and sorrow.

34 He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way.

35 Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock.

36 The righteous shall see it, and rejoice and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

:

37 Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord.

LESSON XXIV.

WHAT shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits towards me?

2 Gracious is the Lord and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

3 The Lord preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.

4 Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.

5 For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

6 In my distress I called up

on the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

7 When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O Lord, held me up.

8 For thy mercy is great above the heavens; and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

9 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; and thy glory above all the earth.

10 Who is like unto the Lord our God, who dwelleth on high! who humbleth himself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in the earth!

11 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

12 God setteth the solitary in families he bringeth out those which are bound with chains.

13 God giveth to a man that is good in his sight, wisdom and knowledge and joy.

14 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.

15 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty!

16 The Lord is good to all; and his tender mercies are over all his works.

17 All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord; and thy saints shall bless thee.

18 The Lord upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.

19 The eyes of all wait upon thee; and thou givest them their meat in due season.

20 Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing.

21 The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.

22 The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.

23 He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

24 The Lord preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.

25 My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: and let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever.

26 Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens; and thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

27 Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgements are a great deep: O Lord, thou preservest man and beast.

28 How excellent is thy loving-kindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

29 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house: and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. For with thee is the fountain of life; in thy light shall we see light.

30 O continue thy lovingkindness unto them that know thee, and thy righteousness to the upright in heart.
