Every Candidate is required to satisfy the Examiners in this paper. Special attention will be paid to the Parsing.

1. By whom was The Deserted Village written? To whom was it dedicated? Is the expression "Sweet Auburn!" supposed to refer to any particular place or village, or is it merely an imagination of the poet?

2. Learn from the beginning to "And rural mirth and manners are no more." Go over this passage very carefully: note any grammatical peculiarity, also any word with a different meaning to the present.

3. Parse the following:

"A time there was, ere England's griefs began,
When every rood of ground maintained its man ;
For him light labour spread her wholesome store,
Just gave what life required, but gave no more:
His best companions, Innocence and Health;
And his best riches, ignorance of Wealth."

Do you agree with the above, or do you regard it as exaggeration? In either case, give your reasons in the form of a short composition.

4. What is a Gerund? Why is it so called, and how would you distinguish it from a participle, if both ended in ing?

5. Define gender, person, mood; rhythm, blank verse, alliteration; trochee, dactyl, anapæst.

6. Explain the following prefixes: circum, homo, pseudo, cata, apo, trans, extra. Which are the most important compound

words?

7. Give the original meaning of the verb to owe, with (if possible) passages from Shakespeare by way of example.
