What will be measured to you? measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And What do you mean by why beholdest thou "mete?" A. Measure. Repeat what our Saviour says about the mote and the beam. What does Christ tell you to do first? What will be the effect of this? What is meant by a mote in your brother's eye? A. A small defect or fault in another person. What is meant by a beam in your own eye? A. A great defect or fault in myself. What are you here taught to do? A. To correct my own faults before I blame or attempt to amend the faults of other people. the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye, and behold a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. VER. 6. Christ forbiddeth the prostitution of holy things. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. throw away good instruction upon those who will not listen to it. VER. 7-12. What does Christ recommend in this section? What does Christ promise you if you ask? What does he promise if you seek? What does he promise if you knock ? What do all these expressions mean? A. That if we pray with faith and constancy, we shall obtain whatever we desire as far as is needful and good for us. How does Christ point out the kindness of men to their children? What do men give to their children? To whom will our heavenly Father give good things? But how must we ask favours of God? A. In faith and humility. What must you do to men? Our Saviour says that this rule, to do to others, as you would have them do to you, is the law and the prophets. What is meant by this? A. It contains every thing which the law commanded, and the prophets taught, respecting our duty to our neighbour. VER. 7-12. Christ recommendeth Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him? Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. VER. 13, 14. What is the head of this section? Where are you to enter ? What is the meaning of "strait ?" A. Close or narrow. What is the gate that leadeth to destruction said to be? that What is the way leadeth to destruction? Whither do many go? What kind of way is that which leadeth to life? Who shall find it? VER. 15-20. Repeat the head of this section. Of whom are you to beware? Who are meant by "false prophets?" A. False teachers. How do they come to you? What are they inwardly? What is meant by sheep's clothing?" A. An appearance of innocence and piety. What is meant by vening wolves?" ra VER. 13, 14. Christ exhorteth to enter in at the strait gate. Enter ye in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat, because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. VER. 15-20. To beware of false prophets, who may be known by their fruits. Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. What can a good tree not bring forth? What can a corrupt tree not bring forth? What does a good tree represent? A. A good man. What does a corrupt tree represent ? A. A wicked man. What does the good or evil fruit represent ? A. Bad or good works. What is done to every tree that does not bring forth good fruit? What will be done to every man whose actions are not good? A. He will be cut down or destroyed. How then will you know either a good tree or a good man? VER. 21-23. . Repeat the head of this section. Who is it that shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven? What is meant by saying, "Lord, Lord?" A. Merely professing to be a disciple of Christ, without keeping his command A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. VER. 21-23. Not to be Christ's disciples in profession only, but in practice. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. A. The day of judgment. What will he profess to them? What is the meaning of "I never knew you?" A. I never acknowledged or approved of you. Whom will he command to depart from him? What is the meaning of "working iniquity?" A. Leading wicked lives. What is the head of this section? To whom does our Saviour compare the man who hears his sayings, and does them? Was this man wise or foolish ? What is said to have come against the house? Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name; and in thy name have cast out devils; and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you; depart from me ye that work iniquity. VER. 24-27. Christ compareth doers of the word to houses built on a rock, those that are hearers only to houses built on the sand. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand. |
