upon him to hear the Word of God?

What did he see standing by the lake?

Who were gone out of them ?

What were they about? Why were they washing their nets?

A. Because they did not mean to let them down, or use them any more?

When he had entered into one of the ships, what did he desire Simon to do?

What did he do from the ship?

When he had left speaking, what did he say unto Simon?

What did Simon reply? What did he show by obeying the command of Christ?

A. His faith and obedience.

What took place then? What happened to their net ?

What were they therefore obliged to do, in consequence of the multitude of fishes?

What were the ships in danger of?

What did Simon Peter, when he saw it, do ? What did he say to Jesus? At what where they all astonished?

What was there in the circumstances to call forth

God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake : but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon, answering, said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing; nevertheless, at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken : And so was also

And

the declaration of Simon Peter?

A. He was alarmed at the divine power of our Saviour, and thought that he himself was about to perish.

What did Jesus then say to Simon?

What did he mean by "catching men?"

A. Gaining and bringing them over to the doctrine of Christ.

When they had brought their ships to land, what did they do?

ST. MARK i. 40.—ii. 1. What are the next miracles mentioned?

Where are they written? What was the leprosy? A. A disease that covered the body with scurfs and scales.

What disease is the palsy? A. A disease which takes away the use of the limbs.

What did the leper do when he came to Jesus?

What did Jesus do and say?

[ocr errors]

What happened as soon as he had spoken?

What was there miraculous in this cure?

A. His cleansing the leper immediately that he touched him.

Into what place did he again enter?

Who came to hear him preach the word? [294]

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not from henceforth thou shalt catch men. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

ST. MARK i. 40.—ii. 1. Christ healeth a leprous man and one sick of the palsy. And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word

A. By taking so much pains to bring the sick man to Jesus, and, therefore, being fully persuaded he could cure him.

What did Jesus he saw their faith?

say when

But what did the Scribes reason in their hearts?

What did Jesus say to them, when he perceived their reasonings?

What two things does he compare together, with respect to the ease of doing them?

What can the same power, which does the one, do also? Whose power alone could do either?

A. The power of God. How did Jesus prove that he had that power?

A. By working a miracle, and instantly curing the paralytic.

What did Christ tell the people they might know by this miracle?

What did he, therefore, say to the sick of the palsy ? What did he immediately do? What did the people do?

unto them. And they came unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? And immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy) I

say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house. And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed,

What do you mean by
glorifying?"

A. Giving glory to.
What did they say ?

ST. MATT. xii. 9.-ST. MARK vii. 31.

What are the next miracles mentioned?

Where are they written? When Jesus departed thence, whither did he go? Who was there?

Why did they ask Jesus, if it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath-day?

What did they wish to prove against him?

A. That he was not a strict observer of the Sabbath.

What did he reply to them?

If a sheep fell into a pit on the Sabbath-day, what would they do?

Which is better, a man or a sheep?

What does Christ prove from this?

What did he say to the man?

What happened then? What may we learn from this miracle?

A. That it is lawful to do works of charity and kindness on the Sabbath-day.

Whither did Jesus then

go?

Who was the next diseased person they brought to be healed by Jesus?

and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.

ST. MATT. xii. 9.-ST. MARK vii. 31.

Christ healeth a man with a withered hand, and a dumb man.

And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath-day? that they might accuse him. And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath-day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath-days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole like as the other.

And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coast of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put E 2

his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit and touched his tongue. And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said unto him, Ephphatha, that is, be opened. And straightway his. ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. ST. LUKE Vii. 11.-ST. JOHN iv. 46. Christ restoreth a widow's

son to life, and healeth a nobleman's son.

And it came to pass the day after that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched
