6 And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, 7 grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come

sick and ready to die; and when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. Jesus went with them; and when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof, &c. (but say in a word and my servant shall be healed). When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick. Lu. vii. 2, 3. 6. 9, 10. There was a certain man in Cesarea called Cornelius, a centurion, a devout man; he saw in a vision evidently, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in unto him, and saying unto him, Send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter, he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. Then (after having seen heaven opened, and that the Spirit said unto him, Behold three men seek thee) Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius, and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek. And on the morrow Peter (having heard that Cornelius was warned from God by an holy angel to send for him) went with them; and as Peter was coming in (having entered Caserea), Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up, I myself also am a man. Then Peter (having heard of Cornelius, that he was commanded to send for him, that he might speak unto Cornelius) opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth, I perceive that God is no respecter of persons; but in every nation, he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him, &c. While Peter yet spake these (and other) words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Ac. x. 1-44. And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? Ac. xxii. 25. Then (when he heard that his sister's son had discovered the Jews lying in wait for him) Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain, for he hath a certain thing to tell him. And he (the chief captain, having heard what the young man had to tell him) called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Cæsarea, and horsemen, and spearmen, and provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the goAc. xxiii. 17. 23, 24, 25. Paul (in his dangerous voyage from Adrymyttium to Rome) said to the centurion, and to the sol

diers, Except "these” (“ the shipmen who were about to flee out of the ship") abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved. And the soldiers' counsel (when the ship had run a ground) was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out and escape; but the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose. Ac. xxvii. 31. 42, 43. See xxvii. 54.

6 My servant lieth at home sick, &c.] If I did despise the cause of my man-servant, or of my maid-servant, when they contended with me, what then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? Job xxxi. 13, 14. When the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually. Ac. x. 7. Put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him, where there is neither Greek, nor Jew, circumcision, nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond, nor free; but Christ is all in all. Col. iii. 10, 11. Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. Col. iv. 1. "They" ("the servants") that have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather do them service, because they are faithful arıd beloved, partakers of the benefit. 1 Ti. vi. 2. "He" ("Onesimus") departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever; not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother, beloved both in the flesh and in the Lord. Philem. 15, 16.

Palsy. See chap. iv. 24, and com. And they came unto "him" ("Jesus"), bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. Arise, take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house (said Jesus to him); and immediately he arose, and took up the bed, and went forth before them all. Mar. ii. 3, &c. Unclean spirits crying with a loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them ; and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed (by Philip, the deacon). Ac. viii. 7. And “there” (“ at Lydda”) “he” ("Peter") found a certain man named Eneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy. And Peter said unto him, Arise, and make thy bed. Ac. ix. 33, 34. See verse 7.

7 I will come and heal him.] My daughter is even now dead (said the ruler), but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live. And Jesus arose, and followed him. Mat. ix. 18, 19. And (Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue) besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death; I pray thee come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed, and she shall live.

and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not 8 worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man 9 under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to

And Jesus went with him. Mar. v. 23, 24. Then Jesus went with “them” (“who urged him to heal the centurion's servant”). Lu. vii. 6.

8 I am not worthy that thou shouldest come, &c.] See chap. iii. 11. 14. and com. It is not meet (said Jesus to the woman of Canaan) to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. And she said, Truth, Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table. Mat. xv. 26, 27. I am not worthy (said Jacob, as he expected Esau's coming) of the least of all thy mercies, and of all the truth which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two bands. Ge. xxxii. 10. Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble, thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear. Ps. x. 17.

When Simon Peter saw "it" ("the miraculous draught of fishes") he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. Lu. v. 8. I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof; wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee (said the centurion to Jesus, beseeching him to come and heal his servant). Lu. vii. 6, 7. I am no more worthy to be called thy son (said the prodigal in the parable), make me as one of thy hired servants. I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son. Lu. xv. 19. 21. He it is (said John the Baptist) who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose. John i. 27. Peter said unto him (Jesus), Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. John xiii. 6, 7, 8. See chap. xv. 27.

But speak the word only.] See verse 3, and And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth. to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink. Nu. xx. 7, 8. He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Ps. cvii, 20. Hold thy peace, and come out of him (said Jesus to the unclean spirit); and when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a

loud voice, he came out of him. And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? For with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mar. i. 25, 26, 27. Say in a word (said the centurion to Jesus), and my servant shall be healed. Lu. vii. 7.

9 Go, and he goeth.] Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee? Canst thou send lightnings that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are? Job xxxviii. 34, 35. For he commandeth and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves "thereof" (" of the deep"); he maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. P. evii. 25. 29. "They” (“heaven and earth") continue this day according to thy ordinances, for all are thy servants. Ps. cxix. 91. Praise the Lord, fire and hail, snow and vapours; stormy wind fulfilling his word. P1. cxlviii. 8. O thou sword of the Lord, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? Put up thyself into thy scabbard; rest, and be still. How can it be quiet, seeing the Lord hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore (of the Philistines); there hath he appointed it. Je. xlvii. 6, 7. If I bring a sword on that land (that sinketh against me, saith God), and say, Sword, go through the land; that I cut off man and beast from it, though these three men (Noak, Daniel, and Job) were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered themselves. Or, if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to ent off from it man and beast, though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness. For thus saith the Lord, How much more when I send my four sore judg ments upon Jerusalem; the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it both man and beast? Ez. xiv. 17—21. And "he" ("Jesus,” during a great tempest of wind) arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still: and the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? Mar. iv. 30, 40, 41. Hold thy peace, and come out of him (said Jesus to the sparit

10 my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, 11 I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall

of an unclean devil): and when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house; and Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately she arose, and ministered unto them. Lu. iv. 35, 36. 38, 39, I also am a man (said the centurion) set under authority, having under me soldiers; and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. Lu. vii. 8.

Do this, and he doeth it.] Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; not with eye-service as men-pleasers, but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Ep. vi. 5, 6. Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eye-service as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God. Col. iii. 22. Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things, not answering again. Tit. ii. 9.

10 He marvelled.] He (Jesus) marvelled because of their unbelief. Mar, vi. 6. When Jesus heard these things (from the centurion respecting his servant, who was ready to die), he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Lu. vii. 9.

I have not found so great faith.] O woman, great is thy faith, be it unto "thee" ("the woman of Canaan") even as thou wilt. Mat. xv. 28. When he (Jesus) saw their faith (those who brought the man sick of the palsy) he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. Lu. v. 20. Thy faith hath saved thee (said Jesus to her who had anointed his feet), go in peace. Lu. vii. 50. See chap. xv. 28.

11 That many shall come from the east, &c.] And he (the Son of man) shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Mat. xxiv. 31. In thee (said God to Abraham) shall all families of the earth be blessed. Ge. xii. 3. (Again), In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice. Ge. xxii. 18. (Again, to Jacob), Thy seed shall be as the dust of

the earth; and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south; and in thee, and in thy seed, shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Ge. xxviii. 14. The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unte him shall the gathering of the people be. Ge xlix. 10. All the ends of the world shall remember, and turn unto the Lord, and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. Ps. xxii. 27. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. På xcviii. 3. It shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go, and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths, for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Is. ii. 2, 3 And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek, and his rest shall be glorious. Is. xi. 10. I will also give "thee" ("Christ") for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. Is. xlix. 6. The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Is. lii. 10. Arise, shine (0 Church), for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people; but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising. Lift up thine eyes round about and see; all they gather themselves together, they come to thee. Thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side. Then thou shalt see and flow together, and thine heart shall fear and be enlarged, because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee; the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee, the multitude of camels shall cover thee, the dromedaries of Midian, and Ephah; all they from Sheba shall come, they shall bring gold and incense, and they shall shew forth the praises of the Lord. Is. lx. 1-6. O Lord, my strength and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity,

sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of

and things wherein there is no profit. Je. xvi. 19. In the days of these kings (as shadowed in Nebuchadnezzar's dream) shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces, and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Da. ii. 44. In the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills, and people shall flow into it, and many nations shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob, and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths. For the Lord shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. Mi. iv. 1, 2. See Is. ii. 2, 3. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities. And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts. I will go also. Yea many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you. Ze. viii. 20-23. From the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same, my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering; for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. i. 11. They shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. Lu. xiii. 29. And the Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled for I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper. Lu. xiv. 23, 24. They of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Ac. x. 45. When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life. Ac. xi. 18. And when "they" (" Paul and Barnabas") were come (to Antioch) and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. Ac. xiv.

VOL. II.

27. I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers, and that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith, Rejoice ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud him, all ye people, &c. &c. Ro. xv. 8—11. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female, for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then ye are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Ga. iii. 28, 29. Remember, that ye being in times past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision, by that which is called circumcision in the flesh made by hands; that at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenant of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world; but now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us. Ep. ii. 11-14. Whereby (by the few words I wrote afore), when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ, that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel. Ep. iii. 4. 6. There is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free, but Christ is all and in all. Col. iii. 11. I heard the number of them that were sealed, and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses, were sealed twelve thousand. vii. 4. 6. See xix. 30; xx. 16.

Sit down.] Blessed (said Jesus) are those servants whom the Lord when he cometh shall find watching; verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. Lu. xii. 37. And they shall come from the east and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. Lu. xiii. 29. It came to pass that the beggar (in the parable) died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom; the rich man also died, and was buried. Lu. xvi. 22. Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come into him, and will sup with him, and be with him. To him that overcometh will I grant

12 heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast

to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. Re. iii. 20, 21.

In the kingdom of heaven.] See chap. iii. 2, and com. There (in the last judgment) shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. Lu. xiii. 28. They (the apostles) returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch, confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 21, 22. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Co. vi. 9. Now this I say, brethren, That flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 1 Co. xv. 50. We ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure, which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer. 2 Th. i. 4, 5.

12 The children of the kingdom.] See Mat. iii. 9, 10; vii. 22, 23. and com. The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. Mat. xxi. 43. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Ac. iii. 25. I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises. Ro. ix. 3, 4.

Be cast out into outer darkness.] And (the angels of the Son of man) shall cast them (that offend) into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xiii. 42. And he (the king in the parable of the marriage) saith unto him (who had not on the wedding garment), Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to his servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxii. 12, 13. And (the Lord of the evil servant) shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxiv.

51. Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxv. 30. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourself thrust out. Lu. xiii. 28. If God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment, the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. These (who walk after the flesh) are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 2 Pe. ii. 4. 9. 17. Woe unto them (the false teachers)! for they have gone in the way of Cain. These are spots in your feasts of charity; clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. Jude 11. 13.

13 Go thy way.] See verse 4. Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart, for God now accepteth thy works. Ec. ix. 7. For "this saying" ("the dogs under the table eat of the children's bread") go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter (said Jesus to the Syrophenicean woman). Mar. vii. 29. Go thy way (said Jesus to the nobleman of Capernaum), thy son liveth. John iv. 50.

And as thou hast believed.] Then touched "he" ("Jesus") "their" eyes (" of the two blind men), saying, According to your faith be it unto you. And their eyes were opened. And Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. Mat. ix. 29, 30. O woman, great is thy faith (said Jesus to the woman of Canaan): be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. Mat. xv. 28. And Jesus said unto them (his disciples who asked him privately why they could not cast out the devil), Because of your unbelief; for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Mat. xvii. 20. If thou canst believe (said Jesus to the father of him who had a dumb and deaf spirit), all things are possible to him that believeth. Mar. ix. 23.
