which a man took and sowed in his field. Another parable spake he unto them, The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till the whole was leavened. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man seeking goodly pearls. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind. Then said he unto them, Therefore every Scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven, is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old. Mat. xiii. 11. 24. 31. 33. 44. 45. 47. 52. At the same time, the disciples came unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? Whosoever shall humble himself as this little child (whom Jesus had set in the midst of them), the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king who would take account of his servants. Mat. xviii. 1-4. 23. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. Mat. xx. 1. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king which made a marriage for his son. Mat. xxii. 2. Woe unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Mat. xxiii. 13. The kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. Mat. xxv. 14. In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces, and consume all these kingdoms; and it shall stand for ever. ii. 44. Blessed be ye poor (said Jesus), for your's is the kingdom of God. Lu. vi. 20. He (Jesus) sent them (his twelve disciples) to preach the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 2. Heal the sick (said Jesus to his seventy disciples), and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. Lu. x. 9. 11. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John iii. 3. 5. We (Paul and Timotheus) give thanks to God; giving thanks unto the Father, who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath

translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Col. i. 13.

3 By the prophet Esaias.] The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 18. xl. 3. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Mar. i. 3. He (John) came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; as it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. Lu. iii. 3-6. He (John) said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. John i. 23.

Prepare ye the way of the Lord.] Cast ye up, cast ye up; prepare the way, take up the stumbling-block out of the way: for thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Is. lvii. 14, 15. Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me; and the Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the Messenger of the Covenant whom ye delight in; behold, he shall come saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. iii. 1. "He" ("John") shall go before him (Jesus), in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. And thou, child (said Zacharias to John), shalt be called the prophet of the Highest; for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, to prepare his ways. Lu. i. 17. 76.

4 His raiment.] What went ye out for to see? (said Jesus to the multitudes,) a reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? a man clothed in soft raiment ? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. Mat. xi. 7, 8. And he (Ahaziah) said unto them (his messengers, whom he had sent to enquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron), What manner of man was he which came up to meet you, and told you these words? (Is it not because there is not a god in Israel that thou sendest to enquire of Baal

loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey. Then went out 5 to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about Jordan, And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their 6

zebub?) And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite. 2 Ki. i. 7, 8. It shall come to pass on that day (on the extirpation of false prophecy) that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive. Zec. xiii. 4. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. Mal. iv. 5. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey. Mar. i. 6. And "he" ("John") shall go before "him" ("Jesus") in the spirit and power of Elias. Lu. i. 17. I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy, a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. Re. xi. 3.

And his meat was locusts, &c.] John came neither eating or drinking (said Jesus to the multitudes), and they say, He hath a devil. Mat. xi. 18. Even these of "them" ("the flying creeping things") ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind. Le. xi.

22.

Wild honey.] He (the Lord) found him (Jacob) in a desert; he made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of his fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock. De. xxxii. 13. And all they of the land came to a wood, and there was honey upon the ground. And when the people came into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath (for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening). But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath; wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it into an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes were enlightened. 1 Sa. xiv. 25, 26, 27.

5 Went out to him.] And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judea, and from beyond Jordan. Mat. iv. 25. Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went ye out for to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Mat. xi. 7-10. And there went out VOL. II.

unto “him” (“John") all the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Mar. 1.5. Then said "he" (" John") to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Lu. iii. 7. The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. Lu. xvi. 16. And John was baptizing in Enon, near to Salem, because there was much water there; and they came and were baptized. John iii. 23. He was a burning and a shining light (said Jesus of John), and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. John v. 35.

6 Were baptized.] See verse 11. 13. 16. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean. From all your filthiness, and from all your idols will I cleanse you. Ex. xxxvi. 25. I indeed baptize you with water (said John), but he (that cometh after me) shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. Mar. i. 8, 9. John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water, but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose. He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Lu. iii. 16. And "they" ("the Pharisees") asked him and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them saying, I baptize with water, but there standeth one among you whom ye know not, &c. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was bap tizing; that he (Jesus) should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I (John) come, baptizing with water; and John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him; and I knew him not. But he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. John i. 25-28. 31-33. John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salem; and they came and were baptized; for John was not yet cast into prison. Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. John iii. 23-25. John truly baptized with water, but "ye" (the "apostles") shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Ac. i. 5. Repent and be baptized every one of you (said

Peter on the day of Pentecost) in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Ac. ii. 38. 41. That word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) that word I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him. Ac. x. 36-38. Then remembered I (said Peter in his defence before the apostles and brethren, in Judea, for going in unto men uncircumcised) the word of the Lord; how that he said, John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Ac. xi. 16. Then said Paul (to the disciples at Ephesus, who said they were baptized unto John's baptism), John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Ac. xix. 4. 5. 18. Brethren (said Paul to the Jews) I would not that ye should be ignorant how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 1 Co. x. 1, 2. (Ye are) buried with "him" ("Jesus") in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. Col. ii. 12. Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly, through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Tit. iii. 5, 6. Let us go on unto perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance; of the doctrine of baptism, and of laying on of hands, &c. He. vi. 1, 2. (The law sacrifices, &c.) could not make him that did the service perfect; which stood only in meats and drinks and divers washings, and carnal ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation. He. ix. 9, 10. See chap. xxviii. 19.

Confessing their sins.] And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the "live goat" (the "scape goat"), and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, and all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man, into the wilderness. Le. xvi. 21. If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity

of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me; and that also they hive walked contrary unto me, then will I (the Lord) remember my covenant with Jacob. Le. xxvi. 40, &c. Then they shall confess their sins which they have done (a trespass against the Lord), and he (trespassing) shall recompense his trespass with the principal thereof, and add unto it the fifth part thereof, and give it unto him against whom he hath trespassed. Nu. v. 7. And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the Lord God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done? hide it not from me. And Achan answered Joshua and said, Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done. Jos. vii. 19, 20. He (God) looketh upon men; and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; he will deliver his soul from going into the pit. Job xxxiii. 27, 28. I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Ps. xxxii. 5. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Pr. xxviii. 13. I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments. Da. ix. 4. And (they) were all baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. Mar. i. 5. I will arise (said the prodigal in the parable) and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee, and am no more worthy to be called thy son; make me as one of thy hired servants. And he arose and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him. Lu. xv. 18-20. Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ (said Peter to those assembled on the day of Pentecost). Ac. ii. 38. 7 The Pharisees, &c.] I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Mat. v. 20. When the Pharisees

come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers,

heard it (that Jesus healed a man blind and dumb), they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils but by Beelzebub, the prince of the devils. Mat. xii. 24. Knowest thou (said his disciples to Jesus) that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying (not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man, but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man). Mat. xv. 12. 11. Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. Mat. xvi. 6. 11, 12. Then went the Pharisees and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk, saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up seed unto his brother. But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Mat. xxii. 15. 24. 34. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Mat. xxiii. 13, 14. The Pharisees and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash they eat not. Then the Pharisees and Scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? Mar. vii. 3. 5. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. Mar. viii. 15. And they sent unto him certain of the Pharisees, and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. Then came unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection, &c. Mar. xii. 13. 18. The Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. Lt. vii. 30. Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter, but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. But woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye tithe mint, and rue, and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment, and the love of God. These ought ye to have done and not to leave the other undone. Woe unto you, Pharisees, for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues and greetings in the markets. Woe unto you Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. Lu. xi. 39-44. And the Pharisees, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him. Lu. xvi. 14. The Pharisee stood

But this people who knoweth not the Pharisees which were with "him"(“ Jesus") heard these words (I am come into this world, that they which see might not see), and said unto him, Are we blind? John ix. 40. As "they" ("Peter and John") spake unto the people, the priests, and the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon people, and preached through Jesus the rethem; being grieved that they taught the surrection from the dead. And it came to pass, on the morrow, that their rulers and elders, and Scribes, &c. were gathered together at Jerusalem, saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. the people, let us straitly threaten them, that But that it spread no further among they speak henceforth to no man in this name. Ac. iv. 1. 2. 5. 16, 17. There rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses. Ac. xv. 5. that the one part (of the council) were SadWhen Paul perceived ducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided; for the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess both. And there arose a great cry, and the Scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity, but thou hast delivered thy soul. Again, when a righteous man doth turn from his righteousness, and commit iniquity, and I lay a stumbling block before him, he shall die; because thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not, and he doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul. Ez. iii. 18-21. I will put enmity between thee (the serpent) and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ge. iii. 15. The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies; their poison is like the poison of a serpent; they are like the deaf adder that stoppeth her ear, which will not hearken to the voice of charmers, charming never so wisely. Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth; break out the great teeth of the young lions, O Lord. Ps. lviii. 3-6. Draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress, the seed of the adulterer, and the whore. Against whom do ye sport your selves? Against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue? Are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood? Is. lvii. 3, 4. They (the sinful Jews)" watchman") seeth the sword come upon the hatch cockatrice' eggs, and weave the spider's web; he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper. Is. lix. 5. O generation of vipers (said John to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him), who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth, therefore, fruits worthy of repentance. Every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. Lu. iii. 7-9. Ye are of your father the devil (said Jesus to the Jews), and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning; and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar and the father of it. John viii. 44. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil. Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 1 John iii. 10. The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world; and he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ; for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God, day and night. Re. xii. 9, 10.

Who hath warned you?] To whom shall I speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken; behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it. Je. vi. 10. Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul; be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the Lord's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence. Je. li. 6. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt

But if the watchman see the sword come and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned, if the sword come and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. Ez. xxxiii. 3-7. Therefore watch (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus), and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. Ac. xx. 31. For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Ro. i. 18. By faith Noe, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house. He. xi. 7.

Flee from the wrath to come.] Being now justified by his blood we shall be saved from wrath through him. Ro. v. 9. Ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come. 1 The. i. 10.
