Judge in the last day") say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the Devil and his angels: for I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat; I was thirsty and ye gave me no drink. Mat. xxv. 41, 42. Thus saith the Holy One of Israel; because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon, therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant; and he shall break it as the breaking of the potter's vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare ; so that there shall not be found, in the bursting of it, a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit. Is. xxx. 12, 13, 14. It is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched: for every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Mar. ix. 47, 48, 49. And he (the rich man, being in torments) cried, and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am tormented in this flame. Lu. xvi. 24. To you who are troubled (will God recompense) rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 Th. i. 7, 8, 9. The same (who worship the beast and his image) shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation, and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb. Re. xiv. 10. Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. Re. xx. 15. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. Re. xxi. 8.

And cast them from thee.] In that day (of Christ's kingdom) a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles, and to the bats, to go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. Is. ii. 20, 21. Ye shall de file also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold. Thou shalt cast them away: thou shall say unto it, Get thee hence. Is. xxx. 22.

Cast away from you all your transgressions whereby ye have transgressed, and make you a new heart and a new spirit; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Ez. xviii. 31. The night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light Ro. xiii. 12. I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousIness which is of God by faith. Phi. iii. 8, 9. Maimed.] See chap. xv. 30, 31.

When they (Paul and Barnabas) had preached the gospel to that city (Derbe), and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and to Antioch, confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 22. Let us labour, therefore, to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. He. iv. 11. There shall in no wise enter into "it" ("the new Jerusalem") any thing that defileth; neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Re. xxi. 27.

Rather than having two eyes, &c.] See chap. xvi. 26. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? Lu. ix. 24, 25.

10 Heed that ye despise not.] See verses 6. 14. 12. 20. Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. In whose eyes a vile person is contemned, but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. Ps. xv. 3, 4. Who hath despised the day of small things? Zec. iv. 10. He that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me, despiseth him that sent me. Lu. x. 16. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye; but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things; another who is weak eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth; for God hath received him. But why dost thou judge thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment-seat of Christ. Ro. xiv. 1, 2, 3. 10. To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 1 Co. ix. 22. Let no man despise “him” (“ Timotheus"), but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me; for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do. 1 Co. xvi. 11. Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you. His (Paul's), letters (say they) are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. 2 Co. x. 1. 10. Ye know how, through infirmity of the flesh,

I preached the gospel unto you at the first; and my temptation, which was in my flesh, ye despised not, nor rejected, but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus. Ga. iv. 13, 14. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou be also tempted. Ga. vi. I. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. 1 Th. iv. 8. Let no man despise thy youth, but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Ti iv. 12.

Their angels.] See chap. i. 20; ii. 13. 19. He (the Son of man) shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Mat. xxiv. 31. Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. Ge. xxxii. 1, 2. And he (Elisha) answered (his servant), Fear not, for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 2 Ki. vi. 16, 17. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Ps. xxxiv. 7. He (the Lord) shall give his angels charge over thee (Christ), to keep thee in all thy ways. Ps. xci. 11. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts. Zec. xiii. 7, It came to pass, that the beggar (in the parable) died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom; the rich man also died, and was buried. Lu. xvi. 22. The angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors (where the apostles were imprisoned), and brought them forth. Ac. v. 19. ("Cornelius, the centurion") saw in a vision evidently, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius! Ac. x. 3. And behold (while Peter was in the prison), the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison. And he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly; and his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals; and so he did And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. true which was done by the angel, but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city, which opened to them of his own accord. And they went out, and passed on through one street, and forthwith the angel departed from him. And when Peter was come to himself, he said, now I know of a surety that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. Ac. xii. 711. And immediately (when the people gave a shout, saying, of Herod, It is the voice of a god and not of a man) the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory. And he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. Ac. xii. 23. There stood by me this night (said Paul on his dangerous voyage toward Rome) the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve. And he (the prophet Micaiah) said (to the king of Israel), Hear thou therefore the word of the Lord; I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him, on his right hand and on his left. 1 Ki. xxii. 19. The next unto him (king Ahasuerus) was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom. Es. i. 14. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness. Ps. xvii. 15. I am Gabriel (said the angel to Zacharias), that stand in the presence of God, &c. Lu. i. 19. And as for me, thou settest me before thy face for ever. Ps. xli. 12.

11 The Son of man is come, &c.] See chap. ix. 12, 13; x. 6; xv. 24. The Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. Lu. ix. 56. This my son was dead (says the father of the prodigal in the parable) and is alive again; he was lost and is found. It was meet that we should make merry (said he to his elder son), for this thy brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found. Lu. xv. 24. 32. The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Lu. xix. 10. God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. John iii.

17. I am come that they might have life (said Jesus), and that they might have it more abundantly. John x. 10. I came not to judge the world but to save the world. John xii. 47. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Ti. i. 15.

12 How think ye?] What think ye? (said Jesus) A certain man had two sons, &c. (the parable of the two sons sent to work in the vineyard). Mat. xxi. 28. What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They (the Pharisees) say unto him, The son of David. Mat. xxii. 42. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. 1 Co. x. 15.

If a man have an hundred sheep.] See chap. xii. 11. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant, for I do not forget thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 176. All we, like sheep, have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Is. liii. 6. My people hath been lost sheep; their shepherds have caused them to go astray: they have turned them away on the mountains ; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place. I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick. But I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment. And they shall no more be a prey to the heathen, neither shall the beast of the land devour them; but they shall dwell safely, and none shall make them afraid. Ez. xxxiv. 16. 28.

What man of you having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which was lost until he find it? Lu. xv. 4. I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. John x. 11. Ye were as sheep going astray, but are now returned unto the Shep herd and Bishop of your souls. 1 Pe. ii. 25.

Into the mountains.] And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite. 1 Ki. xxi. 17. My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and upon every high hill; yea, my flock was scattered upon all the face of the earth, and none did search or seek after them. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock, in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered, so will I seck out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered, in the cloudy and dark day. Ez. xxxiv. 6. 12.

13 He rejoiceth more, &c.] The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him; in those that hope in his mercy. Ps. cxlvii. 11. He (Jesus) shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Is. liii. 11. As the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. Is. lxii. 5. Behold, I will gather them out of all countries whither I have driven them, in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: and I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: and I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them to do them good; but I will put my fear into their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land, assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul. Je. xxxii. 37-41. Who is God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger ever, because he delighteth in mercy. Mi. vii. 18. The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love; he will joy over thee with singing. Zep. iii. 17. And when he hath found it (the sheep that was lost), he layeth it on his shoulder, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you (said Jesus), that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Lu. xv. 5, 6, 7. There is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth. Bring hither the fatted calf (said the father of the prodigal), and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found. And they began to be merry. Lu. xv. 10. 23, 24. My meat (said Jesus) is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice to

gether. John iv. 34, 35, 36. He shall have judgment without mercy that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment. Ja. ii. 13.

14 It is not the will, &c.] Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Lu. xii. 32. This is the Father's will which hath sent me; that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me; that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day, John vi. 39, 40. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and none is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one. John x. 27-30. While I was with them (whom thou hast gives me) in the world, I kept them in thy name; those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled. John xvii. 12. We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his pur pose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-boru among many brethren. Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them he also glorified. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth: who is he that car demneth? It is Christ that died, yea rathet, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? (As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are ac counted as sheep for the slaughter). Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am per suaded, that neither death, nor life, nor an gels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, not depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in

Christ Jesus our Lord. Ro. viii. 28-39. He (the Lord) hath chosen us in him" ("our Lord Jesus Christ") before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love; having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the Beloved; in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace. Ep. i. 4-7. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which, according to his abundant mercy, hath begotten us again unto a lively hope, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation, ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Pe. i. 3, 4, 5.

Your Father which is in heaven.] See chap. v. 16; vi. 9. 32.

One of these little ones.] He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 11. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the Lord of hosts; smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered, ** and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. Zee. xiii. 7. Feed my lambs (said Jesus to Simon). John xxi. 15. Through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, 1 for whom Christ died? But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 1 Co. viii. 11, 12, 13. I endure all things for the elect's sakes (said Paul), that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 2 Ti. ii. 10. Make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. He. xii. 13. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness, but is long-suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Pe. iii. 9.

15 If thy brother shall trespass, &c.] See -verse 35. If a soul sin and commit a trespass against the Lord, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour; or

have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; then it shall be, that he shall restore that which he took violently, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering. Le. vi. 2-5. If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him. Lu. xvii. 3, 4. Brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers. Now therefore, there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded? Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren. 1 Co. vi. 6, 7, 8. But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. 1 Co. viii. 12. Though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you. 2 Co. vii. 12. Put on, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, forbearing one another, and forgiving; if any man have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Col. iii. 13. This is the will of God, even your sanctification, that no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter. 1 Th. iv. 6.

Go and tell him his fault, &c.] Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Le. xix. 17. Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities. Ps. cxli. 5. Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself, and discover not a secret to another, lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away. Pr. xxv. 9, 10.

Thou hast gained thy brother.] The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he that winneth souls is wise. Pr. xi. 30. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. Ro. xii. 21. Though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more. And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law; to them that are without law, as without law, that I might gain them
