in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wed12 ding-garment: And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in

and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation. Re. v. 9. After this I beheld, and lo a great multitude which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and peoples, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands. Re. vii. 9. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him; for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean, and white; for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. Re. xix. 6-9. 11 When the king came in to see the guests.] He that cometh after me (said John the Baptist) is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire. Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Mat. iii. 11, 12. Let "both" ("wheat and tares") grow together until the harvest; and in the time of harvest I will say unto the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn. Mat. xiii. 30. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory; and before him shall be gathered all nations, and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats. Mat. xxv. 31, 32. And it shall come to pass at that time (of God's judgment against Judah), that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees; that say in their heart, The Lord will not do good, neither will he do evil. Zep. i. 12. Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Co. iv. 5. The word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight; but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. He, iv.

12, 13. I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts, and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. Re. ii. 23.

Which had not on a wedding-garment.] And he (Jehu) said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments for all the worshippers of Baal; and he brought them forth vestments. 2 Ki. x. 22. The king's daughter is all glorious within; her clothing is of wrought gold. She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needle work, the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. Ps. xlv. 13, 14. Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city; for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. Is. lii. 1. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon "me" ("Christ"), because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek, &c. To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord. My soul shall be joyful in my God, for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. Is. Ixi. 3. 10. But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Is. Ixiv. 6. Now Joshua (the high priest, as a type of Christ) was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. Zec. iii. 3, 4. Bring forth the best robe (said the father of the prodigal in the Gospel), and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. Lu. XV. 22. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righte ousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference. Ro. iii. 21, 22. Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof. Ro. xiii. 14. As many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Ga. iii. 27. In this (earthly tabernacle) we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven. If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 2 Co. v. 2, 3. Put on

hither, not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and 13

the new man which, after God, is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ep. iv. 24. Put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge, after the image of him that created him. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free; but Christ is all, and in all. Col. iii. 10, 11. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis, which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white; for they are worthy. He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment, and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life; but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve that thou mayest see. Re. iii. 4, 5. 18. Behold, I come as a thief: blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. Re. xvi. 15. And to "her" (the "wife of the Lamb") was granted, that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white, for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. Re. xix. 8.

12 Friend.] Friend, I do thee no wrong (saith the householder in the parable to the labourer whom he had first hired), didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Mat. xx. 13. Friend (said Jesus to Judas Iscariot), wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. Mat. xxvi. 50.

How camest thou in hither?] I say unto you, Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Mat. v. 20. A certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet. But

Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. How is it that ye have agreed together (said Peter also to Sapphira) to tempt the Spirit of the - Lord? Behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband (for he fell down and gave up the ghost) are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost, and the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these

things. Ac. v. 1-11. Thy money perish with thee (said Peter to Simon the Sorcerer), because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. Ac. viii. 20-23. Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts, and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Co. iv. 5.

He (the Lord)

And he was speechless.] will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail. 1 Sa. ii. 9. So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth. Job v. 16. The righteous shall see it (the prosperity of the poor and afflicted) and rejoice; and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. Ps. cvii. 42. How canst thou (Israel) say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim ? See thy way in the valley; know what thou hast done. As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets. Je. ii. 23. 26. We know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Ro. iii. 19. A man that is an heretick, after the first and second admonition, reject, knowing that he that is such is subverted and sinneth, being condemned of himself. Tit. iii. 10, 11.

13 Bind him hand and foot.] How can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. Mat. xii. 29. Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them. Mat. xiii. 30. Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion; for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. Is. lii. 1. And "he" ("Nebuchadnezzar') commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. Da. iii. 20. Verily, verily, I say unto "thee" ("Simon Peter"), when thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest; but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. John xxi. 18. And when "he" ("Agabus" a certain prophet from

Judea) was come unto us; he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost: so shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. Ac. xxi. 11. And there shall in no wise enter into "it" ("the new Jerusalem") any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie; but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life. Re. xxi. 27.

Outer darkness.] The children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. viii. 12. Cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxv. 30. The Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 The. i. 7, 8, 9. If God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment, the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished. "These" ("false teachers") are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. 2 Pe. ii. 4. 9. 17. The angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame (are the false teachers), wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. Jude vi. 13.

There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.] See chap. xiii. 42. The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. Ps. xxxvii. 12. The wicked shall see "it" ("the exaltation of the righteous"), and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away; the desire of the wicked shall perish. Ps. cxii. 10. When "they" ("the Jews") heard these things (the reproaches of the martyr Stephen), they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. Ac. vii. 54.

14 Many are called, &c.] Enter ye in at the strait gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which

leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Mat. vii. 13, 14. So the last shall be first, and the first last; for many be called, but few chosen. Mat. xx. 16. Lord, are there few that be saved? And he said unto them, Strive to enter in at the strait gate; for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Lu. xiii. 23, 24.

15 Went the Pharisees.] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together; against the Lord, and against his anointed. Ps. ii. 2. And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees, and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to give tribute to Cesar or not? shall we give or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring me a penny, that I may see it; and they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Cesar's. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Cesar the things that are Cesar's; and to God the things that are God's And they marvelled at him. Mar. xii. 1317. And they watched him, and sent forth spies which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, neither acceptest thou the person of any, but teachest the way of God truly. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cesar or no? But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye

me ?

Shew me a penny; whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Cesar's. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Cesar the things which be Cesar's; and unto God the things which be God's. And they could not take hold of his words before the people. And they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace. L. xx. 20-26.

How they might entangle him in his talk.] If he come to see me, he speaketh vanity (said David of his enemy); his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad he telleth it. Pi. xli. 6. Every day they wrest my words; all their thoughts are against me for evil. gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps when they wait for my soul. Ps. lvi. 5, 6, 7. They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down; they have digged a pit before me, into the midst whereof they are fallen themselves. Ps. lvii. 6. Lo, they lie in wait for my soul; the mighty are gathered against me, not for my transgression, not for my sin, O Lord. Ps. lix. 3. They (the Jews) make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. Is. xxix. 21. Come (said the Jews), and let. us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet: come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. Je. xviii. 18. I heard the defaming of many, fear on every side. Report, say they, and we will report it. All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. Je. xx. 10. And as he (Jesus) said these things unto them (pronouncing woe unto the lawyers, &c.), the Scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things, laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him. Lu. xi. 53, 54. Consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied, and faint in your minds.

He. xii. 3.

16 The Herodians.] How is it that ye do not understand (said Jesus to the Jews) that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they, how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees. Mat. xvi. 11, 12. The Pharisees went forth and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. Mar. iii. 6. Take heed (said Christ), beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. Mar. viii. 15.

Master. See verse 24. 26. Go into the city to such a man (said Jesus), and say unto him, The Master saith, my time is at hand, I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. And forthwith "he" ("Judas Iscariot") came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master, and kissed him. Mat. xxvi. 18. 49. When he (Jesus) was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? Mar. x. 17. Simon (said Jesus to the Pharisee), I have some what to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, Lu. vii. 40.

We know that thou art, &c.] There is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness. Their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue (said David of his enemies). Ps. v. 9. They speak vanity every one with his neighbour; with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak. Ps. xii. 2. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart. His words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. Ps. lv. 21. A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet. Pr. xxix. 5. Our transgressions are with us; in transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God; speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off; for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter; yea, truth faileth, and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey; and the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment. Is. lix. 13, 14, 15. They bend their tongues like their bow for lies; but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the Lord. Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders. And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity. Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the Lord. Je. ix. 3-6. Also thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls, and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the Lord. And they come unto thee as the people cometh; and they sit before thee as my people; and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. Ez. xxxiii. 30, 31.

True.] The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips. He walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity. Mal. ii. 6. John xviii. 37. We are not as many which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. 2 Co. ii. 17. Therefore (said Paul), seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not; but have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. 2 Co. iv. 1, 2. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 1 John v. 18.

I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. Ga. i. 10. Of those who seemed to be somewhat, whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me; God accepteth no man's person: for they who seemed to be somewhat, in conference added nothing to me. Ga. ii. 6. As we were allowed of God, to be put in trust with the Gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. 1 The. ii. 4. The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. Ja. iii. 17.

17 What thinkest thou?] And all the people came near, and said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication be accepted before thee, and pray for us unto the Lord thy God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us;) that the Lord thy God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we may do. Je. xlii. 2, 3. Ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the Lord your God, saying, Pray for us unto the Lord God; and according unto all that the Lord our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it. Je. xlii. 20. We desire to hear of thee (said the Jews at Rome to Paul) what thou thinkest; for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. Ae. xxviii. 22.

Neither carest thou for any man.] Neither did he (Levi) acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children. De. xxxiii. 9.
