shall give you in the evening flesh to eat; and in the morning bread to the full: for that the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we (Moses and Aaron)? your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord. And when the children of Israel saw it (the small round thing which lay upon the face of the wilderness), they said, It is manna, for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat. And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited: they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan. Ex. xvi. 8. 15. 35. Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt, and none shall appear before me empty. Ex. xxiii. 15. As the Lord thy God liveth (said the widow of Zarephath to Elijah), I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. And Elijah said unto her, Fear not go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord which he spake by Elijah. 1 Ki. xvii. 12, 13, 14. 16. And there came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God (Elisha) bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof: and he (Elisha) said, Give unto the people, that they may eat. And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat; for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of God. 2 Ki. iv. 42, 43, 44. Elisha said (prophesying incredible plenty in Samaria), Hear ye the word of the Lord: thus saith the Lord, Tomorrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. Then a lord, on whose hand the king (Jehoram) leaned, answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 2 Ki. vii. 1, 2. Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig-tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree hath not

brought forth from this day will I bless you. Hag. ii. 19. Ye are cursed with a curse; for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it: and I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground: neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. iii. 9, 10, 11. How many loaves have ye go and see (said Jesus to his disciples): and when they knew, they say, Five loaves and two fishes. And he commanded them to make all sit down by companies upon the green grass; and they sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all: and they did all eat and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. Mar. vi. 38-44. his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand; and he sent them away. Mar. viii. 4-9. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? (and this he said to prove him; for he himself knew what he would do). Philip answered him, Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here which hath five barley loaves and two small fishes; but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place; so the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of 6 the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up,

When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost: therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that Prophet that should come into the world. Verily, verily, I say unto you (said Jesus to those who came to Capernaum seeking him), ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves and were filled: labour not for the meat that perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you. They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven: for the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst; I am that bread of life your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven; if any man eat of this bread he shall live for ever and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day: for my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed; he that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me and I in him. He that eateth me, even he shall live by me: this is that bread which came down from heaven; not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead; he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever, John vi. 5-14. 26-33. 48-58.

5 Taketh him up.] And he (the devil) brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down

from hence.

Lu. iv. 9. Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above; therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. John xix. 11.

The holy city.] And many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Mat. xxvii. 53. And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem, the holy city, and nine parts to dwell in other cities. Ne. xi. 1. They (the obstinate house of Jacob) call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel: the Lord of hosts is his name. Is. xlviii. 2. Awake, awake, put on thy strength, O Zion, put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city, for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean. Is. lii. 1. O Lord, according to all thy righteousness I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain. Because for our sins and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us. Da. ix. 16. The court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not, for it is given unto the Gentiles, and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. Re. xi. 2.

On a pinnacle.] The porch that was in the front of the house, the length of it was according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the height was an hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold. 2 Ch. iii. 4.

6 For it is written.] See verse 4. Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Co. xi. 14.

He shall give his angels.] He shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Ps. xci. 11, 12. And he (Satan), brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence ; for it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone; and Jesus answering, said unto him, It is said, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Lu. iv. 9—12. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? He. i, 14.

lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto 7 him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, 8 and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of

Lest at any time.] Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side; thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. Job i. 10. Thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. Job v. 23. The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. He keepeth all his bones, not one of them is broken. xxxiv. 7. 20. 7 It is written again.] See verse 4. 10. and com. And (the priests and scribes) said unto him (Jesus), Hearest thou what these (the children crying Hosanna to the son of David in the temple) say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea, have ye never read, Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? Jesus saith unto them (again), Did ye never read in the Scriptures, the stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. Mat. xxi. 16. 42. As touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Mat. xxii. 31, 32. (Seek) to the law and the testimony, if “they” (“the familiar spirits") speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Is. viii. 20.

Thou shalt not tempt the Lord.] The people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water, that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? Wherefore do ye tempt the Lord? And he called the name of the place "Massah" (i. e. "tentation"), and "Meribah” (i. e. "chiding or strife"), because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us or not? Ex. xvii. 2. 7. Because all those men which have seen my glory (said the Lord to Moses), and my miracles which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice; surely they shall not see the land. Nu. xiv. 22. Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God as ye tempted him in Massah. De. vi. 16. They tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust; yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies. Ps. lxxviii. 18. 41. 56. Harden not your hearts as in the provocation,

and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness, when your fathers tempted me,' proved me, and saw my work. Ps. xcv. 8, 9. (The Israelites) lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. Ps. cvi. 14. Now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. Mal. iii. 15. Then Peter said unto her (Sapphira), How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Ac. v. 9. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 1 Co. x. 9. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, when your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. He. iii. 9.

8 The devil taketh him, &c.] See verse 5. The devil taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time: and the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them, for that is delivered unto me, and to whomsoever I will give it; if thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. Lu. iv. 5—7.

And sheweth him all the kingdoms, &c.] What is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Mat. xvi. 26. "He" ("king Ahasuerus) shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom, and the honour of his excellent majesty, many days, even an hundred and fourscore days. Es. i. 4. And Haman told "them ("his friends") of the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king (Ahasuerus) had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king. Es. v. 11. Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased: for when he dieth he shall carry nothing away. His glory shall not descend after him. Ps. xlix. 16, 17. The king (Nebuchadnezzar) spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom, by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty. Da. iv. 30. By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt, for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away. 1 Pe. i. 24. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 1 John ii. 15, 16. The kingdoms of this world are become (said the voices in heaven) the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever. Re. xi. 15. 9 All these things, &c.] What will ye give me (said Judas unto the chief priests), and I will deliver him unto you? Mat. xxvi. 15. Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God, he riseth from supper, &c. John xiii. 3.

I give thee.] The Lord maketh poor and maketh rich; he bringeth low and lifteth up; he raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them. 1 Sa. ii. 7, 8. Yea, all kings shall fall down before him, and his enemies shall lick the dust. Ps. lxxii. 11. He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill, that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people. Ps. cxiii. 7, 8. By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. Pr. viii. 15. I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me. And now have I given all these lands into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him. Je. xxvii. 5, 6. Thou, O king, art a king of kings; for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory. And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all; thou art this head of gold (said Daniel to Nebuchadnezzar). Da. ii. 37, 38. And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. Da. iv. 32. O thou king (Belshazzar), the Most High God gave Nebuchad

nezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour; and for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him; whom he would, he slew, and whom he would, he kept alive, and whom he would, he set up, and whom he would, he put down. This (said Daniel) is the interpretation of the thing (the writing on the plaster): Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. Tekel; thou art weighed in the balance, and art found wanting. Peres; the kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. Da. v. 18, 19. 26-28. Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the prince of this world be cast out. John xii. 31. Hereafter I will not talk much with you, for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John xiv. 30. And when he (the Com forter) is come, he will reprove the world of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. John xvi. 11. He (the Word of God) hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of kings, and Lord of lords. Re. xix. 16.

If thou wilt fall down, &c.] I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God; and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils: ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils; ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table and of the table of devils. I Ca x. 20. 21. If our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost. In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Co. iv. 4. A bishop must be blameless, not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride, he fall into condemnation of the devil. 1 Ti. iii. 6. And I fell at his (the angel's) feet to worship him: and he said unto me, See thou do it not; I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus; worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Re. xix. 10. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not; for I am thy fellow servant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Re. xxii. 8, 9.

10 Get thee hence, Satan.] But he (Jesus) turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan; thou art an offence unto me, for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Mat. xvi. 23. Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the

leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he 12 departed into Galilee; And leaving Nazareth, he came and 13

devil, and he will flee from you. Ja. iv. 7. Your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour; whom resist, stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 1 1 Pe. v. 8, 9.

Satan.] Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. 1 Ch. xxi. 1. Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power, only upon himself put not forth thine hand; so Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. Job i. 6. 12; ii. 1. Set thou a wicked man over him, and let Satan stand at his right hand. Ps. cix. 6. And he shewed me Joshua the high priest (as the type of Christ), standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee. Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Zec. iii. 1, 2. Thou shalt worship the Lord, &c.] Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you. De. vi. 13, 14. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God: him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. De. x. 20. Now therefore, fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity, and in truth. And put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt, and serve ye the Lord. Jos. xxiv. 14. And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, say ing, If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only. 1 Sa. vii. 3. And Jesus answered and said unto him (Satan), Get thee behind me Satan, for it is written, thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Lu. iv. 8. See chap. xxii. 21.

11 The devil leaveth him.] And when the devil had ended all his temptations, he departed from him for a season. Lu. iv. 13. When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me; but this is your hour (said Jesus to the high priests, &c.), and the power of darkness. Lu. xxii. 53. The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John xiv.

Resist the devil, and he will flee from thee. Ja. iv. 7.

Behold, angels came, &c.] See verse 6. Thinkest thou (said Jesusto the high priest) that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels. Mat. xxvi. 53. And behold, there was a great earthquake (at Jesus' resurrection): for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door (of the sepulchre), and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow. And for fear of him the keepers did shake and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye; for I know that ye seek Jesus which was crucified. Mat. xxviii. 2-5. And he (Jesus) was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan, and was with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered unto him. Mar. i. 13. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him (whilst praying on the mount of Olives). Lu. xxii. 43. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. 1 Ti. iii. 16. When he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be the heirs of salvation? He. i. 6. 14. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne, and the beasts, and the elders, and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Re. v. 11, 12.

12 When Jesus had heard.] After that John was put into prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the Gospel of the kingdom of God. Mar. i. 14. For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison, for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her. Mar. vi. 17. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. And (he) came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the Sabbath days. Lu. iv. 31. Now after two days he departed thence (from Samaria), and went into Galilee (and healed the
